Yogi's beginning
Perhaps you have enjoyed the many incantations of Yogi Bear who considers himself "Smarter than the average bear." Now that baby boomers can relive fond memories watching MeTV Toons how many facts do you know about this characer? Were you aware that he as first a guest on another animated series?
Yogi comes across as the king of the beasts when it comes to Hanna-Baarbera. You may have assumed that the lovable cast of animated characters including Baba Looey, Augie Doggie, Huckleberry Hound, Snaglepuss, Cindy Bear and others are minor players and Yogi is the star.
You have seen his friends on Yogi’s Gang (1973), Yogi’s Space Race (1978), Yogi’s Treasure Hunt (1985) The New Yogi Bear Show (1988) and Yogi Bear (2010 live-action/CGI film with Dan Aykroyd voicing Yogi).

Huckleberry Hound was first
The truth is Yogi actually debuted on The Huckleberry Hound Show in 1958 and got his own show in 1961. He was originally voiced by Don Messick who modeled him after Art Carney on The Honeymooners. His signature out fit is a green hat and and green tie.
Yogi's animated series featured Snagglepuss the pink mountain lion and Yakky Doodle the duck. The lovable bear who enjoys stealing pic-a-nic baskets got his start on another cartoon, The Huckleberry Hound Show in 1958 and debuted in his own show in 1961. The firs episode was sponsored by Kelloggs and was titled Pet Pirates. In 1964 there was an animated film Hey There it's Yogi Bear.
He will sleep till noon but before it's dark,
He'll have every picnic basket that's in Jellystone Park.
Yogi has it better than a millionaire
That's because he's smarter than the average bear.

Jellystone Park
Yogi and his friend Boo Boo Bear live in Jellystone Park which is loosely based on Yellowstone Park. Yogi Bear annoys Ranger Smith AKA Mr. Ranger Sir and is always getting into trouble and stealing pic-a-nic baskets. Boo Boo is sweet and innocent and the voice of reason that Yogi rarely listens to.
The Huckleberry Hound Show premiered in September 1958 with Pixie and Dixie the mice and Mr. Jinx the Cat. Yogi Bear's segment was so popular that he was given his own show which really took off with viewers. Hokie Dog and Ding a line replaced Yogi on Huck's series.
Daws Butler was the voice behind Yogi, Snagglepuss, Dixie, Mr. Jinx, Baba Loooey and Huckleberry Hound. Don Messick voiced Pixie, Boo-Boo, and Ranger Smith.Yogi's name was in honor of baseball great Yogi Bera.

Yogi's fairytales and other apperances
Yogi has been in 10 video games and more than 20 movies. In an episode 0f Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated Yogi for the first time was featured as a villain.
In addition to stealing pic-a-nic-baskets and causing trouble for "Mr. Ranger Sir" Yogi has had encounters with a genie and a fairy godmother. Yogi and Boo-Boo live in a cave but in Oinks and Boinks they were tricked by the Three Little Pigs into moving into the house of straw.
Yogi Bear has been entertaining fans for 67 yearsand his antics never grow old. No matter how otu ofhand he gets Ranger Smith continues to look out for him and fans still love this smarter than average bear.
