Who Killed Maddie In School Spirits? (It's Complicated)

It's not simple.

By WHB KHNPublished 11 months ago 4 min read

At the conclusion of the School Spirits finale, Maddie finally discovered the mystery surrounding her murder, but the person who killed her wasn't who she had assumed. Maddie's list of possible suspects included her own mother, Mr. Anderson, and her former best friend Claire. Maddie's life is made much more difficult by the fact that her mother struggles with alcoholism in School Spirits. Maddie knew tell her mother wasn't the one who killed her, though, as she and Simon went to confront her. It comes out that Maddie's disappearance was related to a scene from episode 7.

Dawn crossed over in episode 7 of School Spirits. After discovering her pals disparaging her behind her back, the character was electrocuted to death. Dawn continued to feel that pain until Maddie assured her that she wasn't to blame for what had happened, at which point she was able to forgive herself. As she went over, the lights in the classroom flickered and she was surrounded by a dazzling light that resembled the brightness of paradise. When another student called Janet went over, Wally, Charley, and Rhonda observed that this didn't occur, indicating that she might not have truly gone over and might still be hanging around.

Janet had Maddie's body, but no one killed her.

Who killed Maddie in School Spirits, and what happened to her? As it happens, Maddie did not truly pass away and enter the afterlife of the School Spirits. The fact that she struggled to recall how she died while the other ghosts were able to recall their deaths was a clue to this throughout the first season.

Janet possessed Maddie in order to give her another opportunity at life, which is why her spirit isn't in her body. Maddie's statement that she wished to undergo hypnosis to recall how she passed away but was cautioned against it due to the possibility of a spirit taking over her body also alluded to this. It turned out that Mr. Martin was just as guilty as he appeared to be, and he was beginning to look suspect.

He knew Janet was using Maddie's body the entire time, even if he didn't kill her. At the end of the series, Janet purchases a ticket to flee town while in Maddie's body. Since she lives so far away, it will be challenging to find her so Maddie can reclaim her body and resume her life. Most people were surprised by the conclusion, although after episode 7, Francineh_, a TikTok user, predicted that Janet had possessed Maddie. The fan, however, failed to make the connection regarding Mr. Martin's involvement.

How Does Maddie Recover Her Body?

In School Spirits season 2, Maddie will need to put in a lot of effort with her pals to regain her physical fitness. They won't be able to find Janet if she actually leaves town with Maddie's body because most of them can't even leave school, let alone their neighborhood.

Maddie will probably employ hypnosis, though, as it was previously implied that it might result in someone taking control of her body; it may also enable her to re-enter her own body. How Maddie and her pals will find Janet so Maddie may start over is still the greatest mystery in School Spirits.

Season 1 Hints That Maddie Was Still Alive

There were clues that Maddie wasn't truly dead throughout School Spirits, even if many viewers were a little surprised to see that she was still alive. The fact that Simon could see Maddie but not any other ghosts was, of course, the biggest hint in this respect. Maddie was instantly distinguished from the other deceased Split River High classmates by this. It is still unclear why Simon is able to see Maddie's bodyless soul, but because it is now established that Maddie is still alive, it is obvious that there is another explanation besides his ability to see across the wall separating the realms of the living and the dead.

Staring viewers in the face for the duration of School Spirits season 1 was another powerful clue. While every other deceased student on the opposite side could recall how they died, Maddie was unable to do so. A certain mystery was being set up here, although it wasn't as complicated as many people thought it would be until the season 1 conclusion. Maddie wasn't dead, which is why she couldn't recall how she passed away. It's a hint that only becomes apparent when you watch the first season again with the benefit of hindsight, but it's painfully clear.

Janet was the last significant clue that Maddie was still alive in School Spirits. The revelation that Janet was in possession of Maddie's body was shocking. Much earlier in the first season, though, there was a clear indication that this was the case. Maddie is told that none of the deceased pupils had completed their coursework and crossed over for years when she first gets to the other side.

Given this, though, Janet's absence from the other side ought to have caused some eerie raised eyebrows among Split River's deceased residents. But now that the first season of School Spirits is over, the answer is clear: Janet is in Maddie's body, so she isn't on the other side.
