Watched Boss Level? 4 More Time Loop Movies in 4 Different Genres You Don't Want to Miss

Time loop movies feel like a whole different genre right now

Hulu's latest film, Boss Level

I'm stuck in a time-loop. I wrote for the If This, Then That challenge so many times. I failed all of them. Will this story be the one? I won't know, I'm living the same day every day. But I hope you will help it in your regular timeline. I hope that if I end up escaping this loop, I'll see a glimpse of success.

You want to watch a movie. You like horror, comedy, or sci-fi. Or you are a fan of the occasional romance. Well, I got you covered. I have 5 different time-loop movies in their core genre just for you!

The Action Genre - Boss Level (2021)

For those who watched Boss Level, it's safe to assume that it is their favorite action film for 2021 already.

Hulu's movie is about a man, stuck in a time loop, trying to find his way out the only way he can. With his skills. Roy Pulver, played by the action favorite Frank Grillo, is a retired special forces officer. He wakes up in the same scenario every day, trying to learn the patterns of traps laid around him. Everyone seems to hunt him, and he tries to find why.

His ex-wife, played by Naomi Watts, is the answer to the mystery around the loop. While the bad guy, Mel Gibson, is the boss behind all this.

I love two things in this movie. The nostalgia of old games with retro sounds, like he actually plays a game, and the action sequences.

The action sequences are magnificent. I have seen a ton of movies, close to 1100 now, and I've seen it all. I get hardly surprised by action movies nowadays. Well, let me tell you that I got surprised by this movie, a lot. Putting a retired special forces officer on the wheel of the movie is gonna make it way more exciting.

He drinks coffee while blindly shoots the helicopter driver outside of his window…Come on!

I know about Joe Carnahan since I watched A-Team, and if you have watched it too, then you know he is great when it comes to action movies.

I love time loop movies. After Groundhog day's success, it feels like it's a separate genre. They are fun and have the potential to explore many ideas.

What makes a time-loop movie so good? What's the recipe that will make you engaged even after watching so many time-loop movies?

Without further ado, let me show you 4 more time-loop movies. I tried writing about all types of time-loop movies but I got bored in round 24, so 5 are enough…

The Comedy Genre - Palm Springs (2020)

Andy Samberg on Palm Springs

Hulu came up with another time-loop movie, this one came before Boss Level though. Hulu, you are about to gain a piece of my heart if you continue creating gems like these.

It became fast enough one of my favorite comedies of all time. An instant classic.

When you get Andy Samberg (Brooklyn 99 squad where are you at), you are meant to have a great movie in your hands.

Andy, playing a character named Nyles, finds himself stuck in a loop, in Palm Springs, in a wedding he doesn't want to be. He accidentally draws J.K Simmons (I don't think you need an introduction for this guy), and Cristin Milioti (The mother from How I Met Your Mother) in the same damn loop.

Andy Samberg knows how to show the apathy of someone who is stuck for so long in a time loop, and his comedian skills are perfect for this role. I won't say more about the story, it's definitely a great movie you don't want to miss!

The Horror Genre - Happy Death Day (2017)

A scene from Happy Death Day

In a few words, this is the horror version of a time-loop movie. Horror, with comedic incidents of course (that applies to the recipe of a time-loop movie, we'll discuss later on).

Jessica Rothe, (your typical unknown actress that becomes known after a horror film role) is our unfortunate protagonist in this fun horror film.

Unfortunate? You might wonder. Yes, so unfortunate that she is doomed to live the day she dies over and over again.

And her only way out is finding out who her killer is.

It's the type of movie that will explore a million ways of dying. It presents various jump scares of course.

If you want to watch a horror movie, this one is for you.

There's a second movie (really, did you believe there won't be a second horror movie following the first's success?), called Happy Death Day 2U. I have some dignity and didn't watch it, but if you want to, it exists…

The Sci-Fi Genre - Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow

You obviously know Tom Cruise for his endless set of skills (Liam Neeson reference for the few ones). From Mission Impossible franchise to Jack Reacher, this guy can do it all!

But, in this movie, he isn't that guy. He is a soldier, but he prefers to stick on the backline. He is sent to go fight against an alien threat and dies as fast as he went in.

But that's not the end. He wakes up on the same day. Living, again and again, only to become better. But he needs the extra help from the mastery of Emily Blunt, who is the badass soldier that knows how aliens work. She makes Tom the guy we knew and loved. And together, they fight for the saving of Earth.

It's actually a fun movie, with glorious effects. Having two of the fans' favorite, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, surely helps as well.

Don't go in with high expectations about the story and you will have a blast.

And did I mention the effects? They were magnificent!

The Romance Genre - Groundhog Day (1993)

Bill Murray in Groundhog Day

You figured it out. Groundhog Day was meant to be on this list. The pioneer of time-loop movies made us happy back in the day. Well, not me, I was born in 1996…But later on, I had just the same fun my dad had when he watched it for the very first time.

For those who don't know about this movie, Bill Murray plays a reporter who hates going to the same event every year, Groundhog Day. Imagine his reaction when he ends up waking up again on the same day.

Bill Murray is one of the actors that will make you laugh only from his poker face. His dead-face reactions give us a great time. He ends up knowing his co-worker better, and he starts having feelings for her.

Even if it's a 28-year-old movie, it's still an easy watch. I end up watching it once every year, to be honest.

I would recommend it if you watched this before the others though. It's always better to watch from the original all the way to the newer ones.

Final Thoughts

What's the recipe for the perfect time-loop movie? I don't know. If I did, I would make my own movie…

But some ingredients, exist in every movie on the list.

  1. A pinch of humor
  2. A slight dose of depression
  3. Plenty of exhaustion
  4. Tons of experience
  5. Wisdom for when they escape the loop
  6. Dozens of dead-faces

Here, I presented to you 5 movies from the time-loop genre (if this is even a genre) with a different main genre.

Whatever movie you chose, make sure to tell me about it. I'll be on Instagram to discuss it with you.

And if you liked my list, make sure to follow me on Letterboxd, where I make more lists and add critics as well!

That was round 41, a rainy Monday, and I don't know if and how I can escape it. I just hope that it will be my best effort for this movie challenge if I ever escape this madness.
