Throughout “Fiction” there are different classifications for users of magic. This post will go over those titles and add to the atmosphere of the blog.

If you find or know of another title/type then please comment it so I can add it and credit you. This will also be important for a future blog so be sure to keep up with me for that, let’s begin.

Mage:

The catch-all term for magic users and the word that I’ll be using instead of saying magic user all the time. From what I’ve seen, this just describes anyone that can use any type of magic at any level. Some places put this title a step above novice which should tell you how common and easy to label this is.

There are unique variations on the mage by Final Fantasy (Black Mage, White Mage, Blue Mage, Red Mage, etc).

Maybe you can create another type of mage that honors the ones made by Final Fantasy but with a new spin.

Wizard:

The Wizard is usually the type of mage that has the pointy hat and staff. Or a wand for Harry Potter.

Wise and powerful, the Wizard is another catch-all term for a magic user but not as broad.

Magician:

The Magician from what I’ve seen has a more negative connotation. A Magician is usually one who uses illusion magic or tricks to make you think they’re doing actual magic. Like stage performers in our world.

Sorcerer:

The Sorcerer title is usually only for those that are very powerful users of the darker side of magic. It’s not always like that since the D&D version exists but that’s what I’ve seen the most.

Because of this, many Sorcerers are evil or sneaky but that doesn’t have to be the case, your Sorcerer can be good.

Here are two videos on the Evil type of Sorcerers/Sorceresses by The Authentic Observer.

Necromancer:

The infamous mage is usually depicted as evil for focusing their spells on the dead but it does not need to be so. Necromancers focus their magic on Necromancy which involves using dead souls. For a full breakdown, I’ll make a Necromancy post in the future.

Warlock:

This is the male version of a witch. He works with some of the darkest magics known, mostly involving demons and eldritch horrors. The weapon of choice, unlike the Witch, is the staff instead of a wand.

Witch:

The Witch is a female who uses dark magic that is usually given by demons and eldritch horrors. They specialize in magic like Hexes and Curses, stuff that can have a lasting impact on the story.

They also are well-known for their reliable familiars.

Shaman:

The Shaman uses the spiritual and primal side of magic. The Shaman mainly deals with spirits from nature or the dead.

Their spell casting is weird and eccentric involving dancing and unique rituals.

Their magic, like the Witch, can be deadly to the caster if steps are not taken to prevent it. Think of Voodoo magic and you're on the right track.

Archmage:

This is the ultimate title a mage can receive, there might be others but the ones I know are unique and do not make this general list.

Only mages that have done something extraordinary and have learned almost every spell can be called an Archmage.

Archmages are almost always old and wise. This is for a good reason, since it would be weird if a child was an Archmage. It could work if they got it by birthright which could be interesting depending on how you write it.

Magister:

The Magister is a noble or powerful mage that has political power. The Magister doesn’t have to be powerful, they could've just inherited the political position.

Spell Blade:

This is a unique mage that uses melee weapons to fight, either conjured or enchanted. These weapons can have a mutual relationship with the wielder or become a talking familiar.

The weapon can also be a parasite who feeds on the wielder’s:

• Soul

• Blood

• Memories or etc.

This mage can also use other spells but mainly focuses on their weapon.

Besides that, it could just be a normal sword that's used with spells. This would be a Mystic/Spell Knight.

Summoner:

These are the mages that focus mostly on summoning creatures for battle. The magic they use can be called conjuration or just summoning.

Almost every other type of mage can learn how to summon, but the summoner has access to stronger options. They can also summon more than the other types.

Summoners can also learn enchantment magic to strengthen their summons further.

A rarer skill is the ability to fuse with their summon for a drastic power-up. If two normal summoners fight it becomes like a Pokemon match.

Conclusion

Well, that’s all for my general list of spell caster types and titles. Tell me if I forgot some so I can credit you and add it. I hope you learned something, my fellow arcane scholars, till next time.
