The Oldest and Most Mysterious Books in the World That Still Baffle Us

From cursed pages to unreadable scripts—these ancient books are more puzzling than any RPG side quest

If you can read that language, congratulations—you’ve officially unlocked level 99 wizard mode. Teach me, sensei.”

As a gamer and a blogger, I’m used to solving puzzles, unlocking lore, and diving into secret storylines. But let me tell you, some mysteries in the real world make even the toughest boss fight look like a warm-up. I'm talking about the oldest and secret books of the world—ancient texts filled with secrets, coded languages, and legends that still confuse historians, scientists, and the rest of us curious nerds.

Whether you're into history, fantasy, or just love weird mysteries that feel like real-life horror games, you're in for a wild ride. Grab a drink, turn down the lights, and let's explore the world’s oldest and most secret books.

1. The Voynich Manuscript – The Most Confusing Book Ever?

Let’s start with the king of mystery: The Voynich Manuscript.

Date: Believed to be written in the early 1400s

Language: Unknown. Totally unreadable. Like someone mashed a keyboard and added plants.

Pages: 240+ pages of bizarre illustrations, plants that don’t exist, and naked women bathing in green pools.

Historians, cryptographers, and even AI have tried decoding it—no luck. Some believe it’s a lost language, others say it’s an elaborate hoax, and a few think it’s alien knowledge (yes, seriously 👽).

My opinion?

It’s either a medieval version of an April Fools' joke or the ultimate fantasy game guide… we just haven’t unlocked the class yet. 😂

2. The Book of Soyga – A Book That Kills?

Yes, you read that right.

The Book of Soyga is also called the Aldaraia and was owned by the famous magician and scholar John Dee in the 16th century. It’s a Latin book filled with magical spells, tables of numbers, and so much mystery it feels cursed. Legend says that when John Dee tried to translate it, he needed the help of angels (through something called Enochian magic). After Dee died, the book was lost for 300 years.

Creepy part?

Rumors say whoever fully decodes the book dies shortly after.

(Okay, now this is officially scarier than any horror game side mission! 🫣)

My suggestion: Read about it, but maybe don’t go full Indiana Jones trying to solve it. Just saying.

3. The Codex Gigas – The Devil’s Bible 😈

This one is not only the largest medieval manuscript in the world, but it also comes with a pretty creepy nickname: The Devil’s Bible.

Weight: 75 kg (yep, you’d need a gym membership to carry it)

Pages: Over 600

Special Feature: A giant drawing of Satan on one full page (totally not suspicious at all 😳)

According to legend, a monk wrote the entire book in one night after making a deal with the devil. Whether true or not, the book contains the Bible, medical texts, and spells. It’s stored in Sweden now, and people say it has a strange, cold energy.

Personal view: If my character in a game found this book, I’d probably equip it and immediately get cursed with -50 health regen. No thanks.

4. The Rohonc Codex – The Unknown Language Book

This book is an ancient manuscript discovered in Hungary, written in an unknown language that nobody has successfully translated. The script uses strange symbols, and the illustrations look religious but… weirdly off. No one knows who wrote it or why. Some claim it’s a hoax, while others believe it’s a sacred script from a lost civilization. You know when you're playing a game and find an old scroll that gives you no XP, no loot, just confusion? Yeah, that's the Rohonc Codex in real life.

Funny thought: Imagine writing your diary in symbols just to confuse future historians—this might be the ancient version of that. 😂

5. The Picatrix – A Book of Astrological Magic

If Hogwarts had textbooks, this would be in the restricted section. The Picatrix is an ancient book of magic, astrology, and spiritual science. Originally written in Arabic, it later spread to Europe, influencing scholars and mystics.

It talks about:

How to create talismans

Calling on planetary spirits

Dream manipulation

It’s so dense that even reading one chapter feels like grinding through a long RPG tutorial. My gamer-blogger advice: If you love alchemy, spells, and celestial stuff, look this one up. Just maybe don’t try the rituals unless you want your toaster to start levitating. 😅

Why Do These Books Still Matter Today?

In a world filled with smart devices and social media scrolls, you’d think people would forget about ancient texts. But no—we’re more obsessed than ever. These books hold secrets, stories, and mysteries that connect us to something bigger than ourselves.

Maybe it’s curiosity. Maybe it’s the gamer instinct in us wanting to unlock hidden lore. Or maybe... it's because a part of us wants to believe there’s still magic left in the world. These books remind us that some things are still unsolved, still hidden, still waiting.

Final Thoughts: Books Are the Ultimate Loot

To me, these ancient books are like legendary loot drops in the game of human history. Some are cursed.

Some are unreadable.

Some are just plain weird.

But all of them are fascinating.

If you ever get the chance to learn more about these books or see them in a museum (some are still preserved), I say go for it! Just don’t go reading any demon-summoning spells at 3 a.m.—unless you’re trying to speedrun the afterlife. 😂

Recap of the Mysterious Books:

Voynich Manuscript – Unreadable. Undecoded. Wild.

Book of Soyga – Book with a deadly legend

Codex Gigas – Big, old, and devilish

Rohonc Codex – Confusing on every level

Picatrix – Magic, stars, and possible chaos
