The Internship - A Movie Review

The Internship is a fun movie with an introspective message about the business world.

This is not your average internship.

The Internship reported into theaters in 2013. After two salesman’s jobs go down the toilet, they decide to rebuild their careers. Taking an unpaid internship at Google, the men compete with young, tech-savvy geniuses to gain new employment opportunities.

Have you ever noticed how movies have a way of helping you with your career goals? The Internship is just that but it hinders on too many relatable cliches that we’ve seen in other films. Nonetheless, The Internship is a fun movie with an introspective message about working together.

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson have compatible chemistry that makes them so fun to watch in any film. They have the funniest interactions, easily improvising off one another. Their dynamics vary but that’s okay. Billy and Nick have contrasting goals during their time at the Google internship, so the program helps adjust their life skills.

Vaughn has now made it onto my list of favorite actors. For the longest time, I used to dislike Vaughn. Since I have given him a second chance, I have watched more of his films. Doing his usual comedy routine in The Internship (which includes talking fast) Vaughn is the highlight of this movie.

The Internship is more of a character film than you think. It’s a diverse group of people. Although it’s a cliche movie where the characters are stereotyped (ex: overachiever, nosy, nerd), that’s what the film is all about. Each person in this program has a story. Never judge a person based on appearance, intellect, or background.

The actors do an incredible job. Dylan O’Brien, Josh Brener, Tiya Sircar, and Tobit Raphael did an excellent job with their dynamic. They learn to work with one another to evolve as a team. My favorite scene is when they take a moment to view the bridge together.

More credits include Rose Byrne, Max Minghella, Aasif Mandvi, and Josh Gad right before the success of Disney’s Frozen. John Goodman and Will Ferrell make memorable cameos. And 100 real Google employees were extras!

The comedy is a little weird in some places, but it’s a fun film. One scene that I didn’t find necessary was the quidditch game. I know the internship program has an assortment of challenges, but I didn’t find how the game fits in with the nature of the program.

Google had a hand in the film’s making, allowing five days for filmmakers to shoot in their actual headquarters and what products would be depicted in the film. I would like to visit this place. It’s a cool setting. This is not your average internship, indeed.

Falling under the usual cliches, The Internship is predictable. It doesn't break new ground in terms of plot development or storytelling but it’s a resonating story. Anyone who is fresh out of college should watch this film.

Finding what you want to do as a career is a daunting process because there are so many options. I know I was overwhelmed when I first graduated college. Take your time and explore your options. Do what you need to do to match your career goals. Most importantly, it’s never too late to start over. Believe in yourself and what you can do.

Shawn Levy did an excellent job conveying this message and portraying the world of Google internships. Levy highlights the business world, how to make connections, and giving yourself more than one chance. It’s important to adapt to change.

I could watch The Internship again and again so I suggest that you put it on your watch list.
