The girlfriend, more like wtf did I watch
An honest opinion about the TVshow "The girlfriend"

Hello, hello,
The first time I wrote an article with a similiar title "Materialist, more like wtf did I watch" (click here to read) I didn't expect to feel the need to make this a series. So welcome to WTF did I watch! Where sometimes I watch something and I hate it or love it so much that I need to come talk about it.
The show
The girlfriend is a 6 episode TVshow made by Amazon Prime. It stars names like Olivia Cooke (Cherry), Robin Wright (Laura), Laurie Davidson (Daniel) and many more, but these three are the mais characters.
Daniel, a 26 year old, rich and almost a trauma surgeon found a new girlfriend, Cherry. Totally on love he decides that it's time she meets his parents. And that dinner is the beggining of a cascade of events that leads to an unfortunate event. Laura, Daniel's mom and Cherry don't click, like some say. Ever since that dinner ,Daniel is a spectator to this weird competition between his mom and girlfriend. Who will win? Who is right? How far is too far?
This tvshow has a dual perspective, Laura's and Cherry's. Which makes it even more difficult to pick a side, when we see Laura's perspective Cherry looks crazy and dangerous and when we see Cherry's perspective we see a boy mom strangely obssessed with her own son. Let's talk about these two characters more in depth.

Cherry
I have to confess, she is my favourite characther. Have heard the phrase "I support women's rights and women's wrongs"? That's me with Cherry. She is hot-headed, very, very ambitous and a touch of crazy. Maybe I was also manipulated by her like most of the characters because I feel like some of the things she did were justified. I mean imagine feeling right of the bat that your boyfriend's mom doesn't like you, and the only thing that you did was say "hello, nice to meet you"?

Laura
While I was watching one of my thoughts was "I'm so lucky that my mother in law isn't like this". Laura lost her first daughter Rose, and I do believe that sitution made her love Daniel, and care for him the way she did. He is her everything, her biggest gift, and she already lost one child she can't lose another one. Now, like I said, Cherry has a touch of crazy in her, but Laura even before meeting was already making fun of her and asking questions and going behind Daniel's back to confirm the information that Cherry told them like she was doing background checks on an futere employee.

Who's at fault
Like I said, this TVshow ends with a dark end. But who is the villain? Laura? Cherry?
Daniel. While watching I was thinking "Dude, grow a backbone". Not only he let his mom rule his life, he still lived with his parents at 26, not because he didn't have the money to get out of the house (they had a vacation one in Spain, for the gods sake) but because his mom couldn't bare to let him out of her sight. And the only reaction to some of his mom comments or actions (one that I wont talk about because his a major spoiler) was a exasperated "mooom". Even at the end, where he was putting an end to that competition between Cherry and Laura he still did what his mom wanted. Like. Dude.
I also believe that we aren't meant to pick sides. I like Cherry but not because she is the victim, she isn't. Maybe we could argue that Laura didn't like Cherry of the bat because her mom senses sensed Cherry more agressive nature. Or we could argue that if Laura didn't act all boy mom Cherry would stay calm, or, at the first wild behaviour of her Daniel would leave. I guess we will never know.
