The Demon Detective: Akuma-Kun
Spoil-Free Anime Review

I was randomly scrolling through Netflix as one does, I came across an interesting-looking anime. The art drew me in, It was soft and bubbly, yet this was a horror anime. I thought it was only 12 episodes so I would give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised.

Akuma-Kun
Storyline: A boy trying to create a society where humanity realizes its true potential and lives happily, with the help of some unlikely allies.
Info: 12 episodes
Genre: Supernatural Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Rating: TV-MA

I found out while writing this review that this is a continuation of an anime from the 90s which was also called Akuma-kun. It seemed to have been a popular show, with over 40 episodes and 2 movies. You don’t need to watch the original show to watch Akuma-Kun (2023) Just knowing it had an original show makes a lot more sense. We see the characters from the original as the parents of the new main characters. I can understand for someone who grew up with the original Akuma-Kun this was very nostalgic. If you are like me and just want to watch Akuma-Kun (2023) they are just additional characters.
The original was a child-friendly show, and the reboot was graphic. I enjoyed how they kept the art style. They kept the pastel colors and bubble-looking characters. However, they went dark with the storyline, with blood, murder, and scary demons.

I felt as if I was watching a version of Sherlock Holmes and Watson. Akuma-Kun was the quirky observant detective like Sherlock and Mephisto III was the empathetic, organized, and annoyed friend like Watson. Mephisto III is a half-demon who keeps Akuma-Kuns alive and communicates with the clients. Each episode is a mystery the two of them solve, With an overall storyline connecting at the end.
For it only being 12 episodes they make a huge ending. As someone who can predict any show or movie ending, I didn’t guess this plot twist. I hope we get a second season.

My Review: This wasn’t one of my favorite anime but it was still entertaining. I thought the mystery stories mixed with demons made the possibilities endless. I only solved a few causes, while the rest caught me off guard. This is a childlike animation and not a child-friendly show. I enjoyed watching horror in a bubbly light way. Like I mentioned earlier this seems like a version of Sherlock Holmes and I enjoy the banter between Akuma-Kun and Mephisto III. Akuma-Kun seems to be heartless and emotionless, but in the end, he cares deeply for his friend. For it only being 12 episodes I think it’s worth watching, and If they come out with another season I will be watching it.
Have you seen Akuma-Kun? Do you like Sherlock Holmes variants?

One Piece Fan Letter
We follow everyday people as they stumble across the Straw Hat crew. I thought this was such a fascinating look into the lives of the non-pirates in this world. The inspiration and terror they face. We follow a young girl who has found inspiration through Nami. In a world of muscle and devil fruit powers, normal people are seen as less than. She sees how Nami can go on grand adventures without any special powers and finds courage through Nami’s bravery.
