Tangled - A Movie Review

'Tangled' is an entertaining, fun, and charming story.

So, if Rapunzel lets down her hair, it’s long enough to reach the ground?

Tangled is Disney’s 50th film that arrived in theaters in 2010. Captured when she was a baby, Rapunzel has long magic hair. Due to being locked in a tower her whole life, she desires to explore the world. Meeting a runaway thief, Rapunzel discovers secrets.

I still remember watching Tangled in theaters when it first came out ten years ago. Tangled is a fun, entertaining, and charming love story. The moral of the story teaches viewers never to give up on their dreams, no matter the challenge.

Rapunzel’s energetic personality lights up the screen. It is a trait to admire. She is a strong young woman, especially with the way she grew up. Having a chance to venture into the world for a day, Rapunzel learns a valuable lesson that puts her skills to the ultimate test. She stands as a figure to all that you can stand up for your own - with a frying pan.

Flynn Rider (Or Eugene) is one of the best characters in a Disney film. The running gag where posters couldn’t get the shape of his nose right was hilarious. Did you know that he is the first to question why everyone is singing? His growth is the best character development I have seen in a film.

Rapunzel and Eugene’s relationship was developed very well. Their interactions are the best. Their interactions feel real, particularly in the scene where they are admitting to their fears. Vulnerability is put to the test.

In the history of Disney villains, Mother Gothel gets the award for the darkest female villain. Watch her interactions with Rapunzel closely. Even she messes with you. Making sure that Rapunzel will never leave the tower, Gothel is not afraid to manipulate her in whatever way she can. That’s why makes her evil.

Voice talents of Tangled hit the mark. Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi are spectacular. They connected to their characters. Donna Murphy excelled in making Mother Gothel as intimidating as she could. Several other voice talents are included, but most of the time, silent characters achieve so much more. Pascal and Maximum are the best.

Filled with fun musical numbers, excellent animation, and backgrounds, Tangled is a bold story with a strong message. Nathan Greno did a wonderful job in bringing to life an old fable. By adding in his own creative touches, he presented a film for all audiences to enjoy.

The songs are my favorite in Tangled. Songs were scored tremendously by composer, Alan Menkin. A few song numbers to mention are ‘When Will My Life Begin,’ ‘Mother Knows Best,’ ‘I’ve Got a Dream,’ and the signature romantic song, ‘At Last I See the Light’.

Tangled is the most expensive Disney film ever made. It is one of Disney’s first CGI adaptations. Did you know that over 45,000 lanterns float in the sky in ‘I See the Light?’ Animators spent countless hours working on this film. Designs for locations were spectacular, immediately capturing the mood. All that hair on Rapunzel was not easy to animate.

Although it is a fun film with energetic characters, and a fun story, Tangled has a dark atmosphere. Mother Gothel’s behavior could be triggering to some audiences. And there is one sequence that takes a sinister turn. The ending is also a riveting climax that made me gasp the first time I watched it.

I could never get tired of Tangled. Anytime it’s on, I will watch it. If you have not yet seen Tangled, I recommend that you do.
