The Curious Career of Mercedes McCambridge. Top Story - October 2024. Content Warning.
The story goes that attending an open audition for the part of Sadie in All the King's Men (1949), Mercedes McCambridge got angry. Whilst waiting for her chance, she grew appalled with the treatment of the candidates being herded in and out of the office. She went in to meet the director furious and gave Robert Rossen a piece of her mind. She got the part, there and then, by unintentionally giving Rossen the rough edges and passion of the Sadie he wanted. For that role, her first feature film role, she went on to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

These early adopters formed tight-knit communities, often meeting in basements or garages to share their passions and discoveries. Despite being marginalized by mainstream society, these geeks laid the groundwork for the cultural revolution that would follow.

The Untold Story of Sir Isaac Newton: Genius, Alchemist, and the Secrets He Kept
Introduction Sir Isaac Newton is often celebrated as one of the most brilliant minds in history. His contributions to science and mathematics fundamentally altered humanity's understanding of the universe. His achievements earned him a place among the most influential people in history, ranking just behind Jesus Christ in the book The 100, published in 1978. Newton was a legend in his own time, knighted by Queen Anne in 1705 and became the first scientist buried in Westminster Abbey—a final resting place typically reserved for royalty. However, behind the accolades and achievements lies a darker side of Newton's legacy that is seldom discussed: his involvement in secretive and controversial research that could have altered his legacy forever.

Rocky (1976) Review You know what movie I haven’t seen in a long time that I want to see now just to see if it was as good as many folks proclaimed it to be? Rocky! The first one. Of course, they’ve done about 1,701 sequels but I’m going to stick with the first one.

Johnny Guitar (1954)
At the weekend, I went to see Johnny Guitar (1954) at the local art house cinema, as part of their season of Women and Westerns. I don’t usually watch Westerns so I only have a passing knowledge of the tropes and conventions of the genre. When they appeared on the TV in my parent’s sitting room, westerns rarely grabbed my attention. I came up with a theory that I don’t like “sandy” films; the colour palette bored me. Same as I’m not good with the over-use of metallic hues in sci-fi.
