The Big Sick is the Best Movie of 2017
The Big Sick broke my heart into a million little pieces and slowly pieced it back together throughout its gentle, sweet and very, very funny 120 minutes. Featuring an unconventional but brilliant lead performer, a radiant love interest and two of the best possible supporting players anyone could ask for, The Big Sick is, thus far, the best movie of 2017.

Netflix & Kill—Review: 'Castlevania'
Castlevania is an incredible animated show that I never want to see as a live feature. The Netflix-exclusive show based on the video game series is exactly what you need if you like a smart, gory and well-told story. The show takes the legend of Dracula and it gives it a unique angle. This angle shows Vlad Dracula Tepes not as a monster that feeds on the living. Instead, the audience can see Dracula as a husband whose world is shattered after the church burns his wife at the stake.

Viewing 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' Film
Anyone with even a modicum of interest in the spy genre will be aware of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. TV series from the 1960s. It's one of those shows that, even if like me you've seen next to nothing of, you'll be aware of it. It was also a series that seemed set for a big screen incarnation in recent years with everyone from George Clooney to Steven Soderbergh and Tom Cruise reported to be involved. It was only in 2015 that it finally made the leap, directed by Guy Ritchie. The results though were decidedly average.

Box Office Flops Vindicated By History
Not all works of genius are adored the moment that they are conceived and marketed. Sometimes, it takes a little time. In the music industry, there have been many hits that only became hits years after they were first recorded. Many people ignore a certain song, only for it to become discovered by indie groups that start using it as a new anthem.

Cops, Mystics, and Steampunk
One is often told not to judge a book by its cover. Yet when it comes to The Precinct, however, that was precisely what caught my attention. Perhaps that it isn't surprising given it is a graphic novel and that it was the combination of its artwork of a late nineteenth-century policeman with a mechanical arm with a woman wearing a vaguely Victorian yet mystic outfit along with the book being given the subtitle “A Steampunk Adventure.” Intrigued and one library checking out later, the results were definitely fun, to say the least.

Okja: A Review
From the very first moment that Lucy Mirando (the incomparable chameleon that is Tilda Swinton) started down the stairs of the building that her grandfather had owned in her 6 inch pumps, bleach blonde bob, hot pink lipstick, and for an added quirk –– braces, you knew that "Okja" was going to be good.

The Girl King Review
The period drama The Girl King , directed by Mika Kaurismäki, is an intriguing concept. It tells the story of the young tomboy Kristina who inherits Sweden upon her father's death in the 1600s. As queen, she pushes for change, threatening everything the country has been working toward until then. As a woman, she refuses all proposals for personal as well as political reasons. She knows that as soon as she is wed her power will transfer to her husband and her plans for the country will unravel. Kristina also finds herself infatuated with an engaged countess. Unsurprisingly, she is met with opposition for her ideals of knowledge and peace and her refusal to produce an heir. What the plot boils down to is Kristina's obsession with control.

Stunningly Awful 'Blind' May Be Worst of the Year Candidate
In nearly 20 years as a film critic, I have seen more than my share of terrible movies. I have seen The Room without the Rifftrax commentary track. I sat all the way through The Happening with my mind reeling at the incompetence of M. Night shyamalan’s most incomprehensible work. And I have seen all the Transformers movies which should qualify me for some sort of movie critic combat pay. But in nearly 20 years I can genuinely say I have never seen anything quite like Blind.
