'Philomena' Shows the Way for a Catholic Church that has Long Lost its Way
Philomena is yet another instance of the vast, unimaginable crimes of the Catholic Church. Young girls would get pregnant, and the Church sold the babies to wealthy American families. Of course, if complications arose, the wayward girls were spared the embarrassment and died anonymously among makeshift midwives. Based on the research and novel by Martin Sixsmith, the 2013 film does still provide a course for salvation. But if things are ever going to change, Philomena has the playbook, and her insistence on sharing it, makes this Stephen Frears film standout.

My Review of 'Shazam'
Shazam is an interesting take on the comic book movie genre. I know I was really excited about it when I first saw a trailer of the movie last year. It seemed like DC was going into a totally different direction of where they had been going with the dark Justice League series. The trailer looked campy and fun and the movie, for the most part, lived up to the high expectations.

'The White Devil'
The White Devil is a marvelously staged play that deals an early modern tragedy, a type of play in which crime spurs secret retaliation that in turn spurs further revenge. We see this cycle when Branchiano (Daniel Oreskes), married to Isabella (Jenny Bacon), falls in love with Vittoria, who is married to Camillo. Branchiano has his wife killed, and does likewise to Camillo. Francisco, Duke of Florence and his sister, Isabella seeks revenge for her murder, aided by the Cardinal Monticelso (Robert Cuccioli),and Count Lodovico. Vittoria stands trial and is sentenced to a religious house before both she and Branchiano, and a host of others are killed.

My Review of "Wonder"
I didn't really hear much about the movie, Wonder, when it first came out. I guess it's a lower budget movie with little money for advertising. There was barely any press, so it kind of slipped under the radar for me. Watching this movie blind was kind of refreshing, because I let the movie tell me what it's about and not have my own preconceived notion of how it will play out.

'Kite Runner' Literary Analysis
Innocence is something we’re all born with, and it is not something that anyone should forcefully be stripped off of, but some people are evil and willing to do so, and sometimes for their own amusement or benefit. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini tells the story is about a Pashtun boy named Amir and his closest friend Hassan, who is a Hazara. A Hazara is “an ethnolinguistic group in central Afghanistan, Northern Pakistan and Iran, most of whom are Shiʿite Muslims,” according to the dictionary, and a Pashtun is “a member of a Pashto-speaking people inhabiting southern Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan.” Amir is the son of one of the wealthiest men of Afghanistan, Hassan is the son of their servant Ali, who is also a Hazara, thus very poor. The story is narrated from Amir’s perspective but starts on December 2001, though most of the story takes place from 1975 all the way to that point in time. He talks about the highlights and lowlights of his childhood and of his present life.

My Review of 'The Equalizer 2'
Let's start off by letting you all know that I liked the first Equalizer movie. It was a fun movie that had a pretty cool premise. It was about an ex military guy that went into hiding in a low income neighborhood. He took a liking to people in the neighborhood, so whenever anyone messed around with his new friends in the neighborhood, he took vengeance into his own hands. It was fun, and I loved it.

My Review of 'Love, Simon'
I heard a lot about Love, Simon last year, but never got the chance to watch it. It's been available for purchase and streaming for quite some time, but now I finally got the chance to watch it. After watching it, I don't see the huge deal about this movie. It's basically a typical teen movie. I've seen a ton of teen movies and generally I enjoy them because of the innocence that comes with watching the main character's mistakes and relatable situations. This one is a little different because I've never had to go through the same ordeals as the main character, Simon.

A Review of 'Secret City' Season 2 Episode 5 - "For Whom the Bell Tolls"
We are nearly there now! And things are cranking up nicely. Episode five begins with Caroline (Laura Gordon) surprising Harriet (Anna Torv) and demanding that she gets her another audience with the PM. Caroline now seems a bit unhinged and she doesn't confirm or deny she killed her friend. It's just a shame she didn't spill the beans when she was talking to the PM before. The irony is of course that he also wants to talk to her!

'Hidden Figures' - A Movie Review
Get ready for the boatload of math equations. Katherine Johnson is sure to beat you in a math contest. And running, too. Released to theaters in 2016, Hidden Figures tells the story of three different black women working for NASA as they feverishly work to blast John Glenn into outer space. It’s a powerful story about segregation, growth, and not letting others stand in the way against your dreams.
