The Whale
Brendan Fraser has been off the big screen for years now, many of us remember him being our strong and sexy movie crush when we first saw The Mummy and he's generally known as one of the sweetest humans on the planet. So when his new movie was announced the world seemed genuinely proud of him and happy for him. Having now seen the film I am glad to say that all of that pride and excitement was worth it.

Babylon
So the end of 2022 was kind of insane and we didn’t get to see as many movies as we would have liked so January is going to be my catch up month. These will not count towards the year end review of films for 2023 but will be added to the year end review for 2022. So first up we have the second Margot Robbie film of 2022, Babylon. Babylon got a lot of bad reviews, with around 50% on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audience members, and as always I am here to say that everyone that wrote negative reviews about this film are stupid and wrong.

Devotion
AMC A-List has been such a blessing for someone who creates all of her content around film and tv, Devotion was a film that my husband really wanted to see and I honestly went into the movie knowing absolutely nothing about it. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that's my favorite way to go into films. I like going in having absolutely no expectations whatsoever. I was hooked after the first five minutes. I have a very specific thing for war movies that center around aviators, I went through a very long Pearl Harbor and Flyboys phase. Devotion is an excellent addition to my favorite flier movies.

Nellie LaRoy is the 'Pretty Woman' of 'Babylon'
When Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie) first appears on screen in Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, I couldn’t stop thinking about how much she looked like Julia Roberts’ character (Vivian Ward) at the beginning of Pretty Woman. You know, before Richard Gere gives her $3,000 and a new wardrobe to transform her into a suitable escort for his week of business meetings in Los Angeles. Nellie’s big curly hair, skin-tight red halter dress, and black ankle boots are certainly more reminiscent of 1990 than 1926, the year Chazelle’s lavish film about the early days of Hollywood begins. Is this intentional? Are we meant to see in Nellie LaRoy’s journey as a Hollywood it-girl a deconstruction of Vivian Ward’s “Cinderella” transformation?

Doctor Who: The Wrong Doctors Review
One of the greatest innovations Big Finish have made to Doctor Who has been the rehabilitation of Colin Baker's Sixth Doctor. When Big Finish began back in 1999, Baker was a lot of people's least favourite Doctor: his era wasn't well regarded by many fans, and the abrasive nature of Colin's Doctor didn't earn him many fans. However, when Big Finish started working with Colin, things rapidly changed. Gone was the combative, brash, arrogant Sixth Doctor: he was replaced with a more mellow and likeable character. He still had the same level of fierce intelligence and an ability to get off on the wrong foot with people, but he was now much more tactful and much less arrogant. As such, he very quickly became one of the most popular audio Doctors, with his stories often gaining critical acclaim for being some of the best Doctor Who around. So, it was perhaps only natural that, in time, Big Finish would want to bring together the two different versions of the Sixth Doctor into one story; one that would compare and contrast the two in a way that had never been attempted before in Doctor Who history. After all, we'd had multi Doctor stories before, but very rarely does the show ever do a multi Doctor story with two versions of the same Doctor. It's still quite a novel concept, and I think "The Wrong Doctors" might be the best execution of it. As well as comparing and contrasting the two Doctors, it's a great story that pays tribute as well to Bonnie Langford's Mel, and one of the most notable audio Sixth Doctor companions, Evelyn Smythe. In many ways, it works as a tribute to a whole era of Doctor Who, as well as being a great story in its own right.
