Everything is Derivative of Something
We’ve all heard the phrase “everything is derivative of something” well if that’s true then how does a struggling artist present something new? As writers and directors we strive to find new ways to tell the same stories, we analyze and study patterns, tropes, character archetypes and we try and find ways to subvert expectations, that said, we continue to tell the same stories because they are comfortable and people find meaning and safety in familiarity.

Why Babylon is Brilliant
Okay so the time for Babylon came and went, the movie released and it went overlooked and underappreciated and then the Oscar’s came and it went overlooked and underappreciated again. But I think there are very specific reasons for both. And both the reason society overlooked Babylon and the reason the academy overlooked Babylon are the reasons why Babylon is brilliant and should be treated as such.

Thor
We are rounding out the comic recommendations for the big 3. We’ve done Captain America and Iron Man so here we are with Thor. Thor is possibly the hardest character to do MCU based comic recs for because his storylines are quite possibly the furthest from their comic book counterparts so some of these might be a little bit of a stretch so bear with me, but more so blame the MCU. Fans that are upset with Thor’s portrayal on screen actually aren’t wrong, I like that Thor’s portrayal is very different from his comic book counterpart but I understand why comic fans would not like the changes.

The Magic of Writing
Created in 2019. There are several instances in my life that I have felt magic, but nothing quite feels like the first time I fell in love. It was with a book. I would go on to love other books, other stories, but nothing compares to the first one. That feeling of wonder is impossible to recapture. It was not one of the classics, one of those books every educator seemed to hold higher than the rest. It was not one of those books people pretended was their favorite because people wanted to feel smart and stopped believing in magic as adults. This is unfortunate since all writing, no matter the type, is magical.

Dungeons and Dragons
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ opening weekend has reflected just how appreciated this movie is. Dungeons and Dragons is a hilarious and unexpectedly emotional adventure movie that was true to its source material. There have been many attempts at a Dungeons and Dragons inspired movies but they all missed the mark because they were made by people who had clearly never played the RPG. Most of the past attempts are campy, but not in a good way. They also didn’t have the budget of the current attempt. Honor Among Thieves makes D&D fans proud. Nerds and normies alike will enjoy this funny, adventure film.
