Franchises

That Shouldn't Exist

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

In the grand scheme of film there are many franchises. And some of them are brilliant, we have Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Some are mediocre and hit or miss like Star Wars. And some, some just shouldn’t exist at all. In this article we will be discussing films that should have stopped after a single movie. Yet they somehow became a franchise that now has too many movies. These franchises will range from some good and some are bad to all the movies are bad, why are we doing this?

In the only the first movie was good (or at least fun) category we will start with the Fast and the Furious. A franchise that is about to release yet another movie (stay tuned for the article that will be coming out about that). This should have been a one and done, then we could have maybe stretched that to a trilogy. Then you’d think they’d be done when they brought Lettie back, or when Paul Walker died but no they are still cranking these out. They’ve added different muscle heads to keep the action going, because of course Vin Diesel is not enough. They’ve had The Rock, and now Jason Momoa. What riveting story will this next movie contain? After this next film is released we are going to watch them in reverse order and watch the quality increase for funsies so get ready for that series.

Next up is Bring it On. This one falls under the some of them are good and some are terrible category. Really this could have been a solid trilogy but then they just kept going. And the funny thing is that they don’t even try to mix it up or make these any different, it's the same movie every single time with a different cast but that’s about the only variation. The first one is obviously great, the second one exists. And the third one is definitely the funniest, not saying best but definitely the most entertaining. And then there's more movies…6 total actually.

In the only the first one is good camp, we have Scream. Also standing at 6 films with that last one releasing soon. Now let's be clear, no satire should be a series or franchise. It kind of shits on the whole original point. The original Scream wasn’t just good, it was brilliant. It literally revitalized the genre but that success and that originality just gets diminished over time. The repetition of the films really ruins the original premise.

Halloween is also in the camp of only the first one was good and yet it has 13 movies. Which is 12 too many. Jamie Lee Curtis is the original scream queen, and the original film really solidified a lot of tropes in the genre. Like the vanishing bad guy. Now just because there wasn’t a clean resolution doesn’t mean there needed to be another movie. Now the reason this franchise is bad is because they desperately tried to keep it interesting which resulted in the films ending in a very different place that they started. In structure, in theme, in reality it's not good. And they really should have stopped sooner.

Overall franchises that aren’t book adaptations exist as an attempt for Hollywood to make as much money as possible. The reality however is that the longer these franchises go on the more money they lose. They never recoup their investment, so it's never actually worth it. They simply end up oversaturating the market and making people tired of horror movies.
