'Batman' (1989) - Looking Good at Thirty
Thirty years ago saw the release of the Tim Burton-directed Batman movie, starring Michael Keaton as Batman, and Jack Nicholson as the Joker. When you watch it, you see a Gotham City that, despite having some characteristics of the present time of the film's release (such as Prince's music and Vicki Vale's 1980s fashion style), is heavily dominated by aesthetics of the 1940s, a trend that would carry over into the 1992 Batman: The Animated Series. It seems like a surreal, anachronistic marriage of time periods, but it works. Even when one watches it today. The film feels very much like a comic book, with little regard to when exactly it is supposed to take place and what would be authentic to a specific point in history. And while the film no longer resembles the present, it has aged very well.

Why 'The Princess Bride' Is the Greatest Movie Ever Made
Yes, The Princess Bride. A cult classic. But more than just a great film. Reason #1: It tells the greatest love story ever told. Reason #2: Every single genre is in this movie, and it tells the greatest love story.

Classic Movie Review: 'Batman 89'
I was 13 years old in 1989, the perfect age to have my mind blown by a Batman movie. I was rather obsessed with the 1966 television series, which I watched everyday in reruns on one of my local television channels. I didn't have many Batman related toys, and I wasn't a comic book collector, but that didn't prevent me from being as wrapped up in the marketing hype as any other teenager at the time.

Movie Review: 'Euphoria' Is a Moving Exploration of Death
Euphoria is an elegant and elegiac exploration of life and death. Eva Green stars as a dying woman who uses her death to try and reconnect with her sister, played by Alicia Vikander. How Green's Emilie is able to use her slow death to reconnect with her sister is a strange and fascinating story as told by writer-director Lisa Langseth.

'Toy Story 4' the Next Kid—A Non-Spoiler Review
When it was officially announced four years ago that Toy Story 4 was in development, I was skeptical. Toy Story 3 felt like a perfect ending to the film series. We did get three shorts and two specials in the years that followed the release of Toy Story 3, and they were fun. But what more was there to tell that would warrant another film? Well now I can say that even though this movie did not feel as strong as Toy Story 3, it was a follow-up worth making. Here are my big takeaways from the movie, without any spoilers.

Aladdin's Live Action Remake Was Better than I Expected
Given the criticism that the Disney live actions films don't always have the same magic as the original animated classics, I had pretty low expectations with this film. Last month, I wrote an article about how the West End musical was different from the animated classic and I remember saying that I didn't think the live-action film would be as good as the original. I wasn't impressed with the trailers coming out, but I still went to see it in the cinema anyway.

5 Underappreciated Musical Films
Musicals have always been, and will likely always be, a popular genre of entertainment. It's not necessarily my favorite genre—particularly when it comes to film, but I can see the appeal. There's just something cathartic about watching a film where you're not being bombarded with gunfights, explosions, and/or excessive gore. Instead, musicals bombard you with... well... music.

I Was Never a Bo Peep Fan, But That Could Change
When it was announced that Bo Peep would return for Toy Story 4, some fans got excited. And I could not help but scratch my head, because the character has never really interested me that much. I knew what she meant to Woody, but I did not feel certain that her return justified the making of another Toy Story film after Toy Story 3 seemed to wrap things up pretty nicely. But now that we've seen more of Bo Peep in promotional material, I cannot help but wonder whether Toy Story 4 will change my mind about the character.

Rian Johnson’s 'Looper' Creates the Most Problematic Time Travel Movie Ever
Looper is my first experience watching a Rian Johnson film, so note that I haven’t seen The Last Jedi, so I don’t know what to expect. Now, I normally take it easy on the criticism when evaluating a time travel movie—mostly because time travel doesn’t even exist in real life, hence almost anything CAN make sense, in that weird, sorta bizarre way—but Looper by far has the most problematic time travel setup (and resolution) I’ve seen in any temporally-involved film since Back to the Future. It’s a little weird seeing two opposing time travel theories bunched together as if they were ever compatible—the parallel worlds theory, and the butterfly effect/one timeline theory—but that’s exactly where the problem lies.
