Beckett (2021) Movie Review
“Beckett” is a film that aspires to be a tense, paranoid thriller in the vein of classic 1970s films like “The Parallax View” and “Three Days of the Condor”. However, it fails to live up to this ambition, instead delivering an uninspiring and unengaging story about an American tourist named Beckett, played by John David Washington, who finds himself in a dangerous situation in Greece after a car accident kills his girlfriend and leaves him injured. The film's attempt to combine international politics, corrupt government officials, kidnapping, and last-minute heroics falls flat, resulting in a forgettable movie experience.

The film introduces new characters, new twists, and a new location, but it still maintains the thrilling, intense, and darkly humorous atmosphere that made the first film such a success.

Instead, Ritchie presents a neo-noir film, filled with tough and violent men, with H, the main character, being the darkest of them all. Adapted from the 2004 French film "Le Convoyeur," "Wrath of Man" is a time-shifting crime thriller that keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats with its unpredictable plot twists and turns.

The Card Counter (2021) Movie Review
Paul Schrader, the writer and director of the critically acclaimed "First Reformed" from 2017, has returned with a new film called "The Card Counter," starring Oscar Isaac in the title role, with Tiffany Haddish and Tye Sheridan as supporting characters. While this film is not a greatest hits package nor a restatement of Schrader's principles, it still has elements of both. Schrader is known for his use of Transcendental Style in Film, which is a concept he developed in his thesis-turned-seminal-film-text. In the book, he discusses three filmmakers: Dreyer, Ozu, and Bresson, with Bresson being the one Schrader cribs from almost obsessively.
