Mental Health in Fantasy Series
“Do you have any recommendations for good shows or movies?” I can’t begin to tell you how much I love getting this question. I would call myself a self-proclaimed “film buff” if everyone else didn’t proclaim it on my behalf. Not trying to brag or anything, of course, I just love introducing people to stories that they may have otherwise not been aware of. The themes of these stories in films and series are really what drives my recommendations. It’s easy enough to say something like “Hey! You liked ‘Shrek’? Well, here’s ‘Shrek 2’”. But for me, it’s not as much about recommending something with the same kinds of stories or that share the same actors. I appreciate finding human connections that I can see others relating to. I like to identify the themes that really made the show or movie stand out to me and see if I’m aware of any other series or films that may share similar thematic elements, even if they may not share the same medium or even genre. One recent standout example for me that I wasn’t expecting to feel as much human emotion with came from a story where the main characters are primarily superhuman.

Lean On Me & The Cosby Show
The Cosby Show I'm old school. Plus, I hardly watch any tv these days; so, the only movies and shows that I have to talk about are from the eighties and the nineties. So, the first program I have to talk about is Lean On Me which was released in 1989 (March 3, 1989) and was a true story about a high school (Eastside High) in a low class community, with dysfunctional kids from unstable, dysfunctional, homes, and teachers who had given into the horrible circumstances of the school. A principal, named Joe Clark, came along and changed all their lives.

"Why Don't You Talk Black?"
Being born in the late '80s and growing up in the '90s meant that black looked, sounded, and acted a certain way that I didn't always quite live up to. I sucked at basketball, wore button-ups and payless shoes, and wasn’t allowed to listen to my first rap album until the age of 17 solely because the artist had a song called "Jesus Walks;” only to have it quickly taken away because my Dad didn't want me listening to such a "lost young man."

Seven degrees
This year has been rough, and honestly, that’s an understatement. However, one thing I should have invested in at the beginning of this pandemic is streaming services, and they are blowing up. Especially because we are all stuck indoors and need some sense of normalcy and that is where we turn to the television and the lighthearted shows that might make us lose the sadness our lives have become. I don’t know about you, but this actually doesn’t sound like a punishment to me. I get to stay home and watch as many movies as I want? Yes, please. In fact, do ya’ll remember when Netflix tweeted and said, “to the 42 people who have watched ‘A Christmas Prince’ 42 times since Thanksgiving, who hurt you?” I was one of those people. Movies and shows are my life. My personality is a cacophony of literature characters and characters from shows I really enjoy.

The Deaf Role in Movies
The movie "Sound of Metal" was released on Amazon Prime in November 2020. It's about a heavy-metal drummer who loses his hearing and is struggling with drug addiction recovery. The movie shows the emotional rollercoaster of losing hearing, struggling to want it back (and getting Cochlear Implants), and learning American Sign Language (ASL).

Dark Night of the Soul
Flames... The faint, ambient sound of fire as it wafts and burns by the oxygen in the air. In a dark room, stone, large pillars connected to the ceiling high above... A crypt by all standard measurements. Lit only by four floating balls of fire in each corner and two blue flames flanked on either side of me in the center of the room where I sit kneeling on both knees. The clack of metal shoes meeting stone approaches from a large mirror that looks like it holds the void on the wall directly in front of me. My mother, in her all black robes, hood on, and laced with all her magical jewels.

The Hidden Enemy
It wasn't particularly hard to do it. All you have to be is patient. Most of the time, they come to you seeking your open gates, revealing all the treasures within your walls to ally and enemy alike. I don't exactly remember the first time I did it, or if what I did was a complete accident, but I remember the day I became a millionaire overnight. All it took was an address, somewhere so random from my own location that I had no connection to it whatsoever. Next is the bait, you. You walk right into the pack of wolves of the world, spotless and pure white, with no shepherd to protect or guide you. You wait until you hear the growls and howls. Wait until they have your scent. After that, you walk them slowly back into the pen, knowing that they'll follow.
