Why The Office, Works
It's been 17 years since the first episode of The Office came out, and almost 10 years since the series had finished its run on NBC in 2013. But its a funny thing how popularity and cultural relevance works in the entertainment industry. There are plenty of shows/movies/music/fads that came out in the year 2005 that were huge successes and super popular at the time, but fail to hold a scintilla of that same popularity today. So its quite surprising that a show about an office environment would be able to withstand the test of time, and become even more popular now than it ever was back in its original run. And its even more surprising that a show like The Office even was able to survive and have a run, considering it almost was given up on before it was able to find its footing.

Introduction I can’t write comedy. My friend Bill O’Neill is starting a Comedy Section in the Vocal Social Society but I probably won’t be able to contribute any fiction for two reasons. I find fiction difficult to write and if I do write comedy people will not laugh because it may be too convoluted.

The Top 10 British Sitcoms
I love British comedy. I like how it is very self-deprecating, love the farcical nature of it as a metaphor for the hardships of life and even love the subtler aspects of British humour like wordplay. I’ve counted down my favourite examples of the best way of representing this type of humour: the sitcom. Obviously, there may be some glaring omissions (I’ve never seen the original Office) but this is based on what I’ve seen.

Nothing Said Censorship in America More Than the Cancellation of 'Soap'
In my opinion, the 1970s were the Golden Age of situation comedies. Barney Miller, All in the Family, WKRP, MASH and the Odd Couple were all unforgettable and still hold up today. But my favorite may have been Soap. Time Magazine called the series one of the 100 best shows of all time. At the same time, the Museum of Broadcast Communications said it was arguably one of the most creative efforts that network television ever put together. As for me, I hung on the show’s story arc like a bloated tic to its host. Even so, Soap only lasted four seasons and fell prey to a much higher authority.
