Brown Paper Packages Tied up in String
Sunday morning, coffee in hand, blanket laying over my legs and, in the background, plays a YouTube video from The Potter Collector hosted by Peter Kenneth. This morning, I have chosen to watch the unboxing of his fan mail. I really enjoy Peter's Personality and it shines as he opens each post. The fan mail is my favorite topic to watch because it is full of love. Not just love for Peter but for Harry Potter itself. I love seeing all the fan mail he receives from various parts of the world. Talk about uniting a group of likeminded people together. I and many of his fans love watching him as he reads fans letters and opens boxes while singing, “Brown Paper Packages Tied up in String”. The patrons watch as he unwraps the package and we get to see his reaction to the object. Never and unkind word spoken. No ones ability is criticized. He makes that one person feel like their effort is appreciated. I am always amazed at the creative creations he receives from his fans and I love to see his reactions when he unwraps each package for, he is so genuine in his appreciation. I just love watching him as I take on a well needed rest. Nerding out on my Sunday is best spent with the Potter Collector.

The Wizard of Oz saga of Dorothy's ruby red slippers
1939 was a very good year It all began with the 1939 film adaptation of L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz". In the book, Dorothy's shoes were silver, but in the movie, the color was changed to red. This was done in order to take advantage of Technicolor which at that time was pretty new. The opening and the ending of the film were in sepia tones which is why it appeared as a brown tint rather than black and white.

The year was 1999, and three dollars was all it cost to buy a kid a ticket to another world. That ticket came in the form of shiny plastic foil wrapped around 11 pieces of cardboard: a Pokemon Trading Card Game Booster Pack. When my parents handed me that first pack, purchased from the game store in the local mall, I don’t think they knew it was a one way ticket. I never left that world of trading cards again, at least not wholly. I was changed by what I found there. Their old son never came back.

Battle for the Galaxy
Hobbies. Most people have one. The hardest part of joining a community is just that, joining. It can be a little intimidating on your own. Walking past the shop, always gazing in, watching people paint together, play together and laugh together. I always wondered how these people got involved, did they know each other? Is there a way for like minded people to meet and play the game? I just didn’t know. That was until I became friends with someone deep into the hobby. On more than one occasion he would show me his models and current projects. Over a few beers he would tell me all the stories and the lore that gave the game depth, that gave it life. And to tell you the truth, I fell in love. The intricate stories of multiple authors working together, the community that was always there to help either with game play rules or just painting tips. It seemed like it was my cup of tea. So I decided to jump head-first into the world of table top gaming. I bought my first army starter kit and again, I fell in love. Putting the models together, painting them, playing the game, everything.

Memoirs of a Comic Book Dork
When I was a wee lad of around 8, my mother's friend gave me a stack of old comics she had. I was immediately mesmorized by these colorful books with pictures of funny animals and superheroes and all kinds of different characters. I remember some Walt Disney books, Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney's Comics and Stories. There were also some Richie Rich, Little Dot, Stumbo, the Friendly Giant and Little Audrey also. But my favorites had to be the hero books, Superman, Batman, Action Comics, Adventure comics with Superboy, Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane. There were also some miscellaneous hero books, Sea Devils, Tomahawk, Blackhawk and Mystery Into Space. Best of all of them was the one Marvel comic in the bunch, Sgt Fury And His Howling Commandos! I was hooked!
