Supernatural

The Most WTF Storylines

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

In a show like Supernatural pretty much anything goes, the very structure of the show allows for a plethora of out of the ordinary storylines however there are a few stand out plot lines that are weird even in a show like this. Now these are in no particular order, nor do I really think any of these are more intensely weird then the others.

So let's get started with The French Mistake. Now this could be considered a jumping the shark moment for the show. Though it is an entertaining episode and one I genuinely enjoy, it's very out of the ordinary for the world. This is a very intense show and this episode really pulls you out of the world. Though it could be argued that that is the point, considering that at this point in the series it is getting pretty dark, this episode very easily could have been an attempt to alleviate that a little bit. Still it's a strange time for the episode.

The whole God has a sister storyline is the most batshit thing the show has ever done. God finally becoming an actual player in the show was one thing and truthfully the show was already running out of steam at this point. But it was clear that the writers were struggling for a way to up the stakes, even though at this point the boys had faced the apocalypse about 10 times. So bringing in someone bigger and badder than God seemed to be their only move. The real problem with this storyline is that the fact that her existence just never came up before seems really…convenient. It’s kind of ridiculous that the boys spent seasons upon seasons dealing with God and everything that surrounds him and no one ever knew that he had a sister. It was just one step too far.

At the very end of that God has a sister storyline is another batshit crazy moment, God and his sister bring Mary Winchester back from the dead. This was actually a good attempt at bringing back the family feeling of the show as that is the emotional tie that carried the show for so long. And though bringing Mary back and shattering the boy's image of her was a realistic use of her character it wasn’t necessary. The thing that has kept these boys going for 11-12 seasons was the fact that they loved each other and they believed in the power of family. So to have their mom completely abandon them after being brought back to life and depict her as someone who doesn’t really care about them was a lot and very unnecessary.

Look Curtis Armstrong was amazing, he’s a great actor and made the character as insufferable as he should have been, however the real gripe I have with him is a single episode. It was the one fully centered on Metatron and told from his perspective. I don’t think it was needed nor do I think it was enjoyable. Metratron really didn’t qualify as a “big bad” and he seemed to just be a very annoying side quest that the boys were forced into.

My first super cringe storyline from Supernatural was Sam drinking demon blood in order to strengthen his psychic abilities. Not only is that super gross but you are telling me that there was no other way for him to exercise his powers and learn to use them better? It's just a lot, I understand and actually really love Sam teaming up with Ruby to learn to exorcize demons with his mind I just don’t think the demon blood aspect added anything to that story.

Overall the show started off really good. And I think it had a very good run of good seasons but there are quite a few off the wall storylines that weaken the overall story and show as a whole.
