Star Wars: A Galaxy Far Far Away but Close to my Heart
“Luke… I am your father.”

Star Wars. Like the title crawl in the beginning of the films, it helped me soar into the cosmos. I watched the original trilogy vhs until they were raw. I was there for the redone trilogy, the prequel trilogy and the sequel trilogy in theaters. The fandom was toxic but it only shows how much they were passionate for the universe. Writing fanfiction about Star Wars was always my passion. I believe everyone can contribute to the universe as a fan. It provides a medium where we can express ourselves.
There’s a reason why jediism is considered a National religion in the United States. Star Wars was set in a galaxy far far away but It has always been inseparable from the hearts and minds of so many individuals. Seeing Luke come from nothing to one of the strongest warriors in the galaxy was awe inspiring to me and others growing up in the franchise. Lightsabers, aliens, spaceships and blasters was all a young child could hope for in a world. Characters such as the intimidating Darth Vader, the sassy, fiercely independent Princess Leia, the smooth, scoundrel Han Solo and hopeful yet ambivalent Luke Skywalker directly and indirectly inspired us all.
“Luke *breathing through hands to imitate Darth Vader* I am your father!” my father would always say this when we were doing anything Star Wars related. My father was the one to introduce me to this large, immersive galaxy far far away. One of my earliest memories was of a VHS trilogy set of Star Wars with THX surround sound, that he bought for the family when I was young. I played his VHS’s until they were ragged and until the covers of the tapes were unrecognizable. I was firmly indoctrinated by the Star Wars universe because of my father and will always remember him when I hear James Earl Jones’ voice behind the dark mask.
Growing up I found myself learning to read several books dedicated to the universe. I read the Thrawn trilogy and Darth Bane and these books motivated me to continue reading and expand my own horizons as well. Going to school I was able to meet others invested in the war between the light and dark sides of the force. My closest friends to this day are the ones that bonded with me over Star Wars when we were young. I fondly recollect a time in which my Friends and I filmed a video together of two Jedi and sith fighting each other. We weren’t the only ones that did this. Multitudes of fans did this everyday because they were inspired.
In my teens I was able to watch the prequels to the Star Wars trilogy. Though some would say they were divisive and campy I truly enjoyed how the universe was expanding with me. The teenage years were awkward for everyone but having something consistent like a universe I could immerse myself into was an anchor in the storms of life. Also in my teens I really enjoyed the Star Wars video games that came out especially Star Wars knights of the old republic. Having an interactive environment such as a video game to enjoy created the best memories I’ve ever had.
As an adult I still reflect fondly on the franchise. I think about how Luke used the force for the first time to destroy the death star. I shivered in anticipation when I watched Luke confront Darth Vader in cloud city. My eyes got wide in excitement when I see Obi-Wan and Anikin Skywalker fight on Mustafar. Even at present I enjoyed the sequel trilogy and hope the universe expands with us.
