Spongebob at 26

still under the sea

Spongebob Squarepants is one of a few long running animated television shows ever produced. Created by the late Stephen Hillenburg and officially aired on July 17, 1999 after an initial sneak peak on May 1 that year, the show had captivated audiences such as myself and critics alike for twenty six years with sixteen seasons, six films and two spin off shows.

This show has a great amount of memorable characters, such as the title character himself. A loveable fry cook for the Krusty Krab whose childlike demeanor might rub off some residents of Bikini Bottom the wrong way, but overall his heart is in the right place. His joys are jellyfishing and taking care of his pet snail, Gary. His best friend and neighbor, Patrick Star might not be the brightest bulb there but he is his right hand man and is there for him sometimes. And there is their grumpy next door neighbor Squidward Tentacles, a struggling clarinet player and painter who works at the Krusty Krab with Spongebob as a cashier. He is constantly annoyed by their antics but claims to like Spongebob, even more so than Patrick. However there have been moments where he is genuinely happy.

Then we have Eugene Krabs, the greedy boss of Spongebob and Squidward and often has cheated them out of some of their pay and charging them for petty reasons, but criticized Squidward for not doing his work most of the time, whether it is sleeping on the job or being rude to the customers. He has a few good spots such as caring for his daughter Pearl and making her happy and his relationship with Mrs. Puff, Spongebob's long suffering driving teacher. He even sees Spongebob as a son and is often patient with him while the same can not be said for Squidward but he does care for him to an extent. Across the street from the Krusty Krab is the Chum Bucket, owned by Krabs’ former friend turned rival Sheldon J. Plankton whose main goal is to steal the secret formula to the Krabby Patty, which had been done in different ways over the years and he failed every time. Even Squidward is not that fond of him. His very short stature made him a target of being stepped on as his plans of taking over the world had gone awry. Karen is not that much nicer than him, or at least nice to him on some episodes to the point he would consider her nagging. Regardless of this, they do love each other and she has to keep him focused on what matters in their relationship and stealing the formula. Sandy Cheeks is the second smartest and nicest character on the show. Coming in from Texas, she forms a strong bond with Spongebob and Patrick and shares a love of science with Plankton.

One of the best recurring characters is Fred who is known as the “My Leg” guy because he would shout “my leg” anytime his leg gets injured. This line became so popular an episode was made because of the running gag. Another is Scooter who would say “Dude” to anyone and he is mostly seen at the beach with his friends. Larry the Lobster is the most popular as he is the lifeguard at the beach, owns a gym and is cool with everybody he meets. Probably the most love to hate one Squilliam Fancyson, Squidward's high school rival who tries to one up him in every way he can, sometimes it backfires.

Over the years, the show made classic episodes that had spawned thousands of memes and are recited and recreated by fans to this day. Last year saw its 25th year on being on the and its 26th was a few weeks ago.

I’ve never actually watched SpongeBob, but reading this made me appreciate just how much depth and history the show has!

I feel Krabs is an all too realistic character now. Shows the transition from a young and hopeful employee to a disgruntled one as well
