Spider-Man + The Arcade

Recalling how I spent one Halloween in the most enjoyable way

By Mark Wesley Pritchard Published 4 months ago 3 min read

Whenever I see old photos of my cosplays, it excites me and reminisce on the enjoyable times I've had. I do plan on continuing celebrating Halloween, even though I've since retired from cosplay. Out of the 15 Halloweens I've celebrated, there was one in particular that I'll always remember.

Mid-October 2018: I was busy putting my Halloween costume together in my living room. So, what was that Halloween costume, you ask? It was The Human Spider from Spider-Man. I had all of the things I needed to put this amazing costume together, but I mainly worked on customizing the shirt. It took me several hours to complete it and let the paint dry overnight. I compiled a DIY back in 2018 on how to customize the shirt and if you would like to see it, the link will be down below.

Halloween Night 2018

The forecast was a bit of drizzle and cloudy, but I was determined to partake in the spookiest time of the year. Since I had the day off from work that day, I put on my costume and headed to my local arcade, which was a lenghty walk from my apartment. Just to note, I went to the arcade for the first time ever a month prior. Once I arrived at the arcade, the owner of the arcade, Shea, was impressed of what I was wearing. He explained that since it was Halloween, the entry fee to play all the games I wanted for a dollar. Anyone who arrived in costume had to pay a dollar. Usually, the entry fee is five dollars. So, I spent at least a couple of hours playing some video games, in my Human Spider costume. I recorded a video of myself just having fun. This was arguably one of the best Halloweens I've ever had.

I would be open to going to my local arcade on Halloween in costume again. It's been about seven years since that night took place. In year's past, I went to haunted houses on Halloween night. Those are the only two places I'm willing to spend Halloween night. That means no bars or clubs. Why not? It's because I rather prioritize my own safety than to be caught up in chaos. Would I go to someone's house to attend a Halloween party? It depends. I want to be reassured that my safety is guaranteed. It's not to say that I don't enjoy having a great time every once in a while. It's just that I'm very selective on where I choose to celebrate Halloween.

I'm currently deciding on who I'll go as for Halloween this year, but I'll keep everyone posted. I have four or five different characters to choose from. Lasy year, I went as Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson and it's now one of my favorite Halloween costumes. I had just retired from cosplay days prior after 10 amazing years doing it. I'll still dress up for Halloween yearly, because it's one of my favorite days of the year. It has no age limit and just because you enjoy it, it doesn't mean you have to stop doing it or give it up completely. Halloween is for everyone, regardless of age. If people tell you that you're too old to dress up and celebrate Halloween, they're not aware of what fun or enjoyment really is. Or, they never learned how to let loose and not taking everything so seriously. So, wear that costume with pride and if others judge you, that's their problem. Besides, when did fun had an expiration date? It doesn't.
