In the prelude to the ongoing Seven Dead Stars saga, offbeat heroes Unsecret and Form crash land on a mysterious planet where things aren’t always as they seem. Although the natives appear friendly, there are clues that suggest something more sinister might be at play. As the tension builds, their only true friend is a curious blue dog harboring secrets of his own. What they discover along the way will not only alter the course of their lives, but the future of the entire universe.

I really enjoy getting stuff in my email that I don’t ever expect to see. This is one of those times. Here’s the deal, I love an intergalactic space book, why well because it is an easy way to create a new universe to explore and introduce a myriad of friends, foes and frenemies. So I cannot wait for this to get underway and if this zero issue is any indication of what we can expect to see then this is going to be one of those great wild rides that I expect to be unpredictable.

I am pretty darn impressed with the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter and establish their base personalities is done extremely well. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the story and introducing the characters it leaves an indelible mark upon the reader.

How we see this being structured and how the layers within the story emerge and grow is pretty marvellous to see. The layers contain the bulk of the characterisation, which depicts the boys as brothers, best friends or lovers and yes the bickering back and forth place them somewhere in the spectrum and that we don’t know which is enticing to keep coming back and learning. How we see depth, dimension and complexity added through the layers is also incredibly well done. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is impeccably achieved.

I’m absolutely loving the interiors here. The linework is exquisite and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this level & quality to the detail work is absolutely sensational to see. That we see backgrounds throughout given as much attention as the characters themselves is phenomenal as they work wonders in enhancing and expanding the moments. They also work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkable eye for storytelling. The colour work is brilliantly rendered. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is sensationally well rendered.

So this is a great introductory issue to a new series. We get a great sense of who these two guys are and what they are about but with plenty of room for them to grow and evolve. Plus they’ve added a great new addition to the family as it were and the potential here is really unlimited. We’ve just enough information to leave us wanting to see and know more about them which is fantastic. There’s some excellent writing with utterly fantastic characterisation that really makes these guys fantastic, this along with some sensational interiors artwork mark this as one series you need to look out for.
