Sakamoto Days: The Life of a Retired Hitman
Spoil-Free Anime Review

I cannot remember the last time I was this excited for a new anime to come out. They dropped the first episodes and you know I was one of the first to be watching them. I haven’t read the manga but I already have high hopes for this anime and cannot wait to see the story unfold.

Sakamoto Days
Storyline: Taro Sakamoto was once a legendary hitman considered the greatest of all time. Bad guys feared him! Assassins revered him! But then one day he quit, got married, and had a baby. He’s now living the quiet life as the owner of a neighborhood store, but how long can Sakamoto enjoy his days of retirement before his past catches up to him?!
Info: 5 episodes are out, and will be airing weekly
Genre: Comedy, action
Rating: TV-MA

Right off the bat, I am a sucker for this genre. I am going to call this genre wholesome gangsters. What is not to love? Tough, badass, killers who are wholesome now. This show reminds me of a mix of the ways of the house husband and The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting. If you haven’t seen either of those you are missing out. These anime show that everyone can live a normal life and turn over a new leaf.
I already knew I was going to enjoy this anime just for that factor. Here is what I didn’t know when I started watching it.
IT WAS ACTION PACKED! I was shocked at the fight scenes and how epic and gory they were. I guess that's why this is rated TV-MA. I thought they were incredible and showed the true caliber of Sakamoto's power, although I have a feeling we have just scratched the surface.
Amazing and entertaining characters. I already knew about Sakamoto, but what an amazing cast we have already.
Shin who is clairvoyant is both funny and a badass. He was inspired by Sakamoto when he was an assassin and inspired again after seeing the joy he found in living a peaceful life. The scenes with Sakamoto thinking about killing Shin and Shin being able to see them were hilarious.
Two episodes in and we already have a badass female character. If you have read my favorite protagonist you know that female characters are a make or break for me in anime. I loved that we saw Lu’s tough fighting side and her sweet side by sharing an important treasure with her new friends. I am very excited about her character.
Of course, I cannot leave out Aoi Sakamoto. The woman who turned Sakamoto's life around. I think it takes a tough woman to date an assassin but in episode 2 we see her teach Sakamoto what it means to be human and feel loss. She got him to give up his career and turn over a new leaf to helping others. That alone makes her pretty amazing.

My Review: 5 episodes in and I am already in love with it. I have very high hopes for the storyline and the character's development. For only 1 month into 2025, we already have an incredible year of anime with the new season of Solo Leveling, Zenshu, and now Sakomoto Days. Let’s hope that there are more great anime to come this year.
What are your thoughts on Sakomoto Days?
