What happened to the beloved Port Harcourt singer?

Sotonye Samuel Horsfall popularly known as Soty broke into all of our lives, consciousness and ears around 2006/2007 when she dropped her fire single, "Malaria".

The song caused WAVES across the country. You have to remember, at the time, YouTube, internet, streaming wasn't as readily available as it is today. So back in the day, when you say a song went viral, it actually MEANT it went viral. Not just that some millions of specific millennials saw it on YouTube or only a certain group of fans, back in the day when a song became popular, you KNEW that it was popular by merit and a whole lot of work and effort. Obviously this is not to bash the music of today or how people are finding success today, it's just to tell you how big Soty's Malaria was that year. Everybody knew it.

I dey see you boy for my area

Everytime I see you, you dey __________

9/10 chance, if you're a Nigerian reading this then you definitely know the remaining parts to those lyrics.

So the question is: how could a person achieve by all measures NATIONAL SUCCESS, write, produce, and release such a massive hit, and then just leave the radar.

Nobody heard from Soty after Malaria. A lot of people joked that maybe the song was a cry for help for her actual malaria and we all just ignored her 🤣

So what really happened?

Did Soty really just die off of Malaria? Why did she stop making music? And where is she now?

To find out, read on and let us talk.

What happened to Soty?

Good question.

Nothing happened to Soty, you just stopped buying her music. 🤣 It's true.

Following Malaria, the Port Harcourt singer released a slew of songs including Nobody, Igbisii, Wicked Boyz, Guys Dey Love. In fact, Soty released a whole 13-song album but we all didn't buy 🤣🤣.

The critics who actually bought and listened to the album said that it was quote: "nothing to write home about." So I guess we weren't missing out on much.

She later changed her name so she could rebrand and try to start off and try her luck again under a fresh name, Soty Da Grey, but it didn't matter. Still, you people didn't buy the music.

In fact, as recently as 2019, Soty released a new song called "Use Me" but did you buy the music? You didn't buy it. I didn't buy it. Nobody bought it.

I always find it funny when people listen to songs from way back when and shout "Ahhh, this song was it that year. What ever happened to this guy? His songs used to be so mad" whereas the guy don dey hustle ever since that track. That is definitely the case with Soty. 🤣

She overnight once again became an up and coming artiste. Isn't that crazy?!

But in good news, Soty is now married. The lover that was giving her Malaria finally gave her the medicine. His name is Richie and the two tied the knot in 2017.

She's also a mother now.

Soty has been doing her thing and her personal life has been succeeding it seems. However, musically, Soty as an artiste isn't what she used to be and she is trying to make a name for herself once more in this tough music industry.

Regardless of what happens, if she succeeds or fails, at least she can always boast that she is the one that wrote the classic hit single, Malaria.

Soty Today.

That's All.
