Phil Robertson Faces Early Stages of Alzheimer’s: A Family's Journey of Resilience
"Phil Robertson’s Family Shares Heartfelt Update on His Health Struggles and Their Unwavering Support"

Phil Robertson, the beloved patriarch of Duck Dynasty, is battling a challenging health diagnosis. At 78 years old, the reality star and duck-hunting enthusiast has been diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, as confirmed by his family. His son Jase Robertson shared the update during a recent episode of their podcast, Unashamed with the Robertson Family, revealing the toll the illness has taken on Phil and their family.
A Tough Diagnosis
Jase, 55, explained that the Alzheimer’s diagnosis stems from ongoing health struggles, including a serious blood disease that has accelerated Phil’s physical and mental decline. “According to the doctors, they’re sure he has some sort of blood disease that’s causing all kinds of problems,” Jase shared. “It’s accelerated and it’s causing problems with his entire body.”
Phil’s battle has been particularly difficult on a personal level. He is experiencing significant pain and memory loss, which has made even daily activities a struggle. Despite his usual resilience, Phil has had to step away from the family’s podcast, a decision that wasn’t easy for him.
“He keeps saying, ‘I’m gonna get back to the podcast,’” Jase revealed. “But I’m like, ‘Well, Dad, you can barely walk around without crying out in pain, and your memory isn’t what it once was.’”
The Robertson Family's Support
The Robertson family is determined to support their patriarch during this difficult time. Jase emphasized that their focus is on making Phil as comfortable as possible, despite the incurable nature of his condition. “We’re trying to do a lot of things to figure out how to make him more comfortable, and maybe help with his memory,” Jase explained.
With a team of doctors working together, the family is exploring ways to ease Phil’s symptoms and preserve his quality of life. “We know there’s no curing what he has,” Jase added. “So, what do you do? You try to make him as comfortable as possible.”
A Legacy of Strength
Phil Robertson rose to fame alongside his family on the hit reality show Duck Dynasty, which aired from 2012 to 2017. The series showcased their lives as a close-knit family running a duck-hunting business in Louisiana. Phil’s unique personality and strong faith made him a fan favorite, and the show’s success solidified the Robertson family’s place in pop culture.
Outside of the show, Phil shares a long and enduring relationship with his wife, Kay Robertson, 76. Together, they have four children—Jase, Willie, Jep, and Alan—and many grandchildren. In 2020, Phil discovered he had a fifth child, Phyllis Thomas, who was born following an affair decades ago. Despite the unexpected revelation, the family embraced Phyllis, further demonstrating their commitment to love and unity.
Jase has often spoken about the strong bond within their family, even amid challenges. Reflecting on his connection with his newfound sister in 2020, he shared, “I fight with my family a lot, but I’ve got their back. I love them. I’m there for them.”
