28 Years Later: The First Teaser Brings Mystery and Chills

"A Chilling Tease and the Return of a Legendary Franchise"

By JayuPublished about a year ago 3 min read

The much-awaited follow-up to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later is finally on its way, and horror fans are already buzzing with excitement. Titled 28 Years Later, the film is set to hit theaters next summer, and Sony Pictures Entertainment recently gave fans a first look—or rather, a first tease—with a chilling teaser trailer.

A Mysterious First Look

On Saturday, Sony Pictures dropped a 13-second teaser for 28 Years Later, and while it may be short, it’s packed with intrigue. The teaser offers little information, focusing mainly on a blank, black screen accompanied by eerie static sounds. Flashes of disturbing images break through the darkness, offering tiny glimpses of what might come in the movie. Adding to the mystery, the trailer has no description, just an "SOS" button as its title.

Fans with sharp ears noticed something interesting in the background sound: a faint beeping that seems to be Morse code for the word "Tuesday," repeated twice. What this means for the story remains a mystery, leaving viewers to speculate as they eagerly wait for more clues in future trailers.

A Big Return for Danny Boyle and Cillian Murphy

What makes 28 Years Later particularly exciting is the return of Danny Boyle, the director of the original 28 Days Later, to the franchise. He’s not just directing—he’s also co-writing the movie with Alex Garland, who penned the first film’s script. This dynamic duo is working together again, which promises fans the same gritty, intense tone that made the earlier movies such hits.

Cillian Murphy, who delivered a breakout performance as Jim in 28 Days Later, is also returning to reprise his role. His return is sure to delight fans who have long wondered what became of his character. Joining Murphy is a star-studded cast that includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven the Hunter), Jodie Comer (Free Guy), Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter franchise), and Jack O’Connell (Back to Black).

A Bigger, Bolder Vision

The creators have hinted that 28 Years Later will keep the raw, punk-inspired spirit of the first movie, but with a much grander scale. Speaking about the project, Alex Garland shared that the film would "hold on to that punk element," while expanding the story on "a bigger canvas."

One major reason for this larger scope is the movie’s significantly higher budget. The original 28 Days Later was made for a modest $8 million, and its sequel, 28 Weeks Later, had a $15 million budget. In comparison, 28 Years Later will reportedly have a massive $60 million budget, allowing for more ambitious storytelling and visuals.

Plans for Two Chapters

Sony has even bigger plans for the franchise. 28 Years Later will not be a standalone movie—it will be the first of two chapters. The second film, 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, is already in the works, with Nia DaCosta set to direct. While Boyle and Garland have written both scripts, the second installment promises a fresh perspective under DaCosta’s direction.

A Legacy of Fear

The 28 Days Later series has been a groundbreaking force in horror since the first film premiered in 2002. It redefined the zombie genre with its terrifyingly fast “infected” and its focus on human survival in a world gone mad. The sequel, 28 Weeks Later, continued the story with its dark and intense exploration of rebuilding society in the aftermath of the outbreak.

Now, with 28 Years Later, fans are eager to see how the story will evolve. What new horrors have emerged nearly three decades after the outbreak? How have the infected changed, and how have survivors adapted?

Mark Your Calendar

The wait for answers won’t be too long. 28 Years Later is set to release in theaters on June 20, 2025. With its impressive cast, returning creative team, and mysterious first teaser, the film is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated horror releases in recent years.

For now, fans will have to keep speculating about the cryptic teaser, but one thing is certain: 28 Years Later promises to be a thrilling and terrifying continuation of a beloved franchise. Get ready to return to the world of the infected, where survival is the ultimate test.
