By animetipzPublished about a year ago 4 min read

One Piece Fan Letter is a special episode of the anime One Piece, released to commemorate the series’ 25th anniversary. It serves as a partial retelling of the One Piece novel Straw Hat Stories, with a new overarching story to tie them together. It was directed by Megumi Ishitani, and aired on October 21st, 2024, at the start of the break the anime took to prepare for the climax of the Egghead arc.

One Piece Fan Letter

Storyline: Two years after the Summit War in which Straw Hat pirate Luffy lost his brother, Ace, the story takes place in the Sabaody Archipelago. The protagonist, a young girl with a strong admiration for Nami, sets off on a small adventure. This ensemble drama focuses on people who do not “pursue” ONE PIECE, depicting the reunion of the Straw Hat Pirates from their perspective.

“Even in such times, majority of people do not aspire to be pirates and do not pursue the One Piece just like them.”

This special has been out for a week and has already ranked #2 on MAL. If you don’t know what MAL is, it has curated some of the most famous anime lists in the fandom and its Top Anime ranking. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood held the title of the top-ranked since 2009 before being dethroned by Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. within a week of being released, One Piece Fan Letter has quickly made its way to #2. We follow everyday people as they stumble across the Straw Hat crew. I thought this was such a fascinating look into the lives of the non-pirates in this world. The inspiration and terror they face. We follow a young girl who has found inspiration through Nami. In a world of muscle and devil fruit powers, normal people are seen as less than. She sees how Nami can go on grand adventures without any special powers and finds courage through Nami’s bravery.

“In this world where power is everything, Even if I get hurt and Trampled on, I still want to struggle, run, and live as freely as I can.”

We also follow the Marine brothers who were a part of the battle. We see how they didn’t stand a chance against the powers they were facing. Their story is incredibly emotional because the older brother was able to save his younger annoying brother. Unlike Luffy who was unable to save his brother.

Do I need to watch all 1,123 episodes to watch One Piece Fan Letter?

I just started watching One Piece for the first time, currently, I am a little over 200 episodes in, which isn’t close to catching up. I saw One Piece Fan Letter on the homepage of Netflix and I didn’t want to wait to watch it. I’m glad I didn’t wait. There aren’t any spoilers in it, even though you might be a bit lost and shocked by the change in the characters you don’t need to be caught up to watch it. Even though I have only 200 episodes in One Piece Fan Letter has become my favorite episode so far. I loved how suttle they were about giving each of the straw hat pirates cameos, as they were being reunited. I’d be lying if I didn’t say the end got me emotional. What an incredible special, and well deserves its popularity.

Toei Animation’s One Piece Anime Begins Its 6-Month Hiatus

Following the release of One Piece Fan Letter, the long-running anime series will take a break from its adaptation of the “Egghead” story arc in favor of remastering a past favorite: the “Fish-Man Island” arc. According to the official previews released by Toei Animation, the remastered “Fish-Man Island” arc will feature new and dynamic visuals on par with the current episodes and other cinematic series like Jujutsu Kaisen.

I can understand why anime fans are upset about the 6-month hiatus. However, for me, I am excited to get this opportunity to catch up. With still over 800 episodes to go I am quite a ways from completely catching up, but I am hoping to at least be closer to catching up in 6 months.

I hate to admit how much I am enjoying One Piece. I have fought to watch this anime for over 10 years because it was “Just too long” or “I didn’t like the animation” I am shocked that a live-action caused me to start on this journey. This special has gotten me even more excited to catch up.
