The Grimm Variations
Storyline: Once upon a time, brothers Jacob and Wilhelm collected fairy tales from across the land and made them into a book. They also had a much younger sister, the innocent and curious Charlotte, who they loved very much. One day, while the brothers were telling Charlotte a fairy tale like usual, they saw that she had a somewhat melancholy look on her face. She asked them, “Do you suppose they lived happily ever after?”.
Info: 6 episodes
Genre: Horror, Dark Fantasy, Mystery
Rated: TV-MA

Each episode took an unusual twist on a classic Grimm fairytail. The episodes are 40 minutes to an hour long so they felt like their own movie. Some of the stories were extremely graphic and horrific, and others were more psychological thrillers. It doesn’t feel right to ground them all together since each episode was so different, Instead, I am going to list the episode and what fairytale it was based on, then just a few thoughts on that episode.
Episode 1: Cinderella — This episode was a psychological thriller. My heart was pounding watching the creepy story unfold. I am not sure I could watch the Disney version of Cinderella after watching this episode.
Episode 2: Little Red Riding Hood — This episode was the most gory and horrific. I thought it was an interesting way to portray Little Red Riding Hood and the plot twist at the end completely caught me off guard. Be prepared for a gory episode before watching this one.
Episode 3: Hansel and Gretel — I didn’t care much for this episode. I would say this was a dark fantasy. It was slow with a very strange concept. Even though this episode wasn’t my favorite I must admit I didn’t see the ending coming from a mile away. This episode reminded me a lot of the promise neverland.
Episode 4: The Elves and the Shoemaker — This story was a thriller. It was my personal favorite. I thought it was a creative concept of the story, almost so creative that I forgot I was even watching a recreation of the Elves and the Shoemaker. Had so many plot twists it kept my mind spinning.
Episode 5: The Town Musicians of Bremen — I didn’t know this story prior to watching this episode and I can’t say I get it after this episode. I wouldn't even call this episode dark, it was just a strange episode. Even though it wasn’t scary it was still entertaining.
Episode 6: Pied Piper of Hamelin — I can see why this is the highest-rated episode. It felt like a psychological thriller with an underlying cult. I thought this episode had the best pacing, and kept me interested the whole time.

Ratings:
My Review: This was a very creative show and I hope it gets more episodes. I loved that they made each episode different, so I had no idea what to expect when I pushed play. Some I would consider straight horror and some I would say are more thrillers. I wanted to add this show to the horror list for exactly that reason. Gives you a good variety of horror.

Decoding the Significance of ‘The Boy and the Heron’
What did I think of the Boy and the Herron? I was lost the whole movie! I didn’t follow a thing, and even though I was entertained I could not tell you a single thing about it after it finished. So of course I had to figure out what it was about after I watched it. I watched YouTube videos explaining the creation and story. Once I learned the depth of the storyline my mind was blown. I rewatched it once it was released to stream and it has become one of my favorite Studio Ghibli films.
See you tomorrow!!
