My Top Five Webtoons

I downloaded the app Webtoon a few years ago now. I've always enjoyed reading and this app offered a new way to read interesting stories on the go- without needing to worry about preserving an actual book from my adventure. My cousins and I all enjoyed reading the app's contents and shared many favorite comics. It was a bonding moment for us you could say, especially when we would gush to each other after finishing a newly released chapter. I'll be honest, novels are more to my liking than comics but the stories that I found on this app were so original and interesting that I couldn't help being sucked in. The best thing about this app? It's a platform for aspiring graphic novelists that actually offer a chance of recognition- if your comic is good enough to pull readers in.

The authors are every day people when they start their webcomics. Now some authors have risen to fame through book deals, tv shows and even movies. The most well known Webtoon Comic for the app is in my top five but you'll be shocked to know it is not my first choice for a read.

5.) Adventures of God - Teo/Corey

"In this slice of (eternal) life, you'll meet God, visit Heaven and learn that what goes on behind the pearly gates isn't exactly the way the good book describes it. For starters, it's a pretty unhealthy work environment - what with God's ginormous, fragile ego and heavy drinking problem. With 419,3000,00 reads and a 9.43 rating, this comedy requires the reader to have a sense of humor. I personally find it hilarious and have seen clips of this webtoon posted on Facebook and Instagram. Others have found 'Adventures of God' remarkably funny too since comic has been nominated for a Ringo Award in the Humor Comic category and fell into second place. My favorite line of the entire webtoon so far? "Nuke the Lizards!"

4.) Pixie and Brutus - Pet Foolery

With 79,800,000 reads and a rating of 9.86, this Webcomic is well loved. Most likely recognized from clips shared on Instagram and Facebook, this comic is loved by all and heartwarming. Hardened by the world, relatable Brutus seemingly protects Pixie's innocent childhood from the very real world that surrounds it. Good for a laugh and a tug on the heart-strings, I highly recommend this comic.

3.) True Beauty - Yaongyi

"After binge-watching beauty videos online, a shy comic book fan masters the art of makeup and sees her social standing skyrocket as she becomes her school's prettiest pretty girl overnight. But will her elite status be short-lived? How long can she keep her real self a secret? And what about that cute boy who knows her secret?" (Summary taken from Webtoon)

With 858,000,000 reads and a 9.54 rating, what is not to love? This Webcomic is simply amazing. The art, the fashion sense and the STORYLINE! It has everything a reader could want- drama, love, wit and hilarious art scenes. This comic is a story of heart and slowly teaches that beauty is not always on the outside and how we perceive ourselves is not always the truth. Adapted to a TV Show in Korea, the show is hilarious and true to Yaongyi's comic. I've already done the hard part of finding the free app for you to watch- Rakuten Viki, now it is your turn to binge.

2.) Lore Olympus -Rachel Smythe

One of most well known Webtoon comics, this webtoon has received well deserved recognition. Over ONE BILLION READS on the app with a rating of 9.71, it's obviously a fan favorite! Earning a book deal with Barnes & Noble, Lore Olympus has sold over forty-four thousand hard copies (44,000)!! The book was an almost exact remake of the free Webtoon Version (an extra chapter was inserted) and still- the paper copy reached the #1 spot of Best Seller on NYT and #1 PBD Bookscan's list. Overall for the year of 2021, Lore Olympus settle at #5 on the Best Seller of the Year's list. If that wasn't enough, Netflix plans on releasing an animated TV Show based on this Webcomic that has all 43,000 members of Lore Olympus Netflix (A Facebook Group) screeching like groupies. I mean, I even named my cat Lore, after this comic!

1.) UnOrdinary by Uru-chan

"Nobody paid much attention to John - just a normal teenager at a high school where the social elite happen to possess unthinkable powers and abilities. But John's got a secret past that threatens to bring down the school's whole social order - and much more. This is by far my favorite Webtoon comic on the app. With over ONE BILLION READS on the app and a rating of 9.75, it's earned the spot of #1 on my Favorite's List. This webtoon contains long chapters, amazing art, interesting dialogue and even all of that is not matched by the original idea of this story. I never know where the story is going to go! Full of cliffhangers, this graphic novel will leave you feening for more. Yes I will admit, I have purchased quite a few fast passes for this story- without regret.

The Webtoon app itself is free with authors releasing new chapters every week. But if you are a fellow reader like myself though, releasing one chapter a week isn't enough. I like to binge chapters and, thankfully for us, there are fast pass options. For cash you can trade your money for Webtoon Coins. Each fast pass cost five webtoon coins to read a chapter that has not been released yet. It's true that comics typically release a chapter each week, but they will have chapters written ahead of time that can only be unlocked by either paying to view them or waiting until the next week when they will rotate into view for free. It's a small price to be paid, I think.
