My Review of "The Bubble"
It was actually better than I thought it was going to be but the bar was low.

The Bubble is Netflix's newest blockbuster comedy to start streaming on their platform. Admittedly, I didn't have too much interest in watching this movie. It looked pretty hokey and generic. My expectations for this movie weren't that high. Luckily for me it wasn't as bad of a movie as I had anticipated.
This movie starts off with our lead character Carol in the middle of the global pandemic. Carol is an actor that's best known for her role in a mindless action movie franchise called Cliff Beasts. Unfortunately for Carol her career has been tanking ever since she skipped the last Cliff Beasts movie to onto new projects.
Her new project was a horrible mess and her reputation as an actress went down with it. Now she's out of work looking for the next role during a global pandemic.
Seeing as the Hollywood executives are slimy money hungry individuals they invite Carol to star in their next Cliff Beasts special. This would require her to jettison to a remote mansion in London. There she and her fellow costars would have to quarantine and isolate. This is basically the bubble that the title is referring to.
Desperate to make money but worried about her boyfriend she eventually agrees to the deal. This is basically when the movie starts to ramp up with the comedy and ridiculous nonsense.
We have a whole bunch of huge personalities with pretty big egos stuck in one small location. There's no doubt there will be craziness. The craziness that we got was actually way more fun than anticipated.
Part of the huge charm of this movie is all of the big personalities involved with the movie. Each one of them are so wildly different from the other and yet it works. They each put themselves into rather precarious situations on their own and the comedy just flows from one scene to the next. At no time did it feel like a comedy skit going to the next.
There are also a surprising amount of movie stars playing a part in this movie. Some cameo actors playing themselves but obviously in a caricature version of themselves.
A lot of other thoughtful ideas were brought into play in this movie as well. They talk about privilege during the pandemic. There are obviously some people in the movie that have benefitted from the pandemic. We also see how some groups of people spin things to make it seem like they're doing worse than they appear to be.
The whole façade of celebrity is revealed in this movie where the movie executives will stop at nothing to get the film out so that they can make more money. They even resort to hiring a Tic Toc superstar in order to garner more interest for the movie. It also helps them as she's constantly creating new posts on her social media to help with the movie.
As I mentioned before the laughs are in the ridiculous of the scenarios these characters get themselves into. At certain points they at the cusp of breaking the fourth wall down. This movie is definitely aware of itself and they are having fun with the audience as they know that we can keep up with their jokes. There's an implied understanding throughout the movie where they just referenced enough in the beginning of the movie that we will understand the joke later on.
Overall, I was a bit surprised with this one. It was a lot more fun than I expected it to be. Being a Netflix exclusive movie I was on the fence as they are really hit or miss with me. This one is at a adequate and fun for me. That's why I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. There aren't a ton of slapstick comedies out there nowadays. This was a welcome change of pace for me.
