My Review of "The Accountant"
An appropriate title for this movie but it doesn't do it justice either.

The Accountant is a cross between John Wick and Rain Man. It was released back in 2016 and I'm surprised this is the first time I've ever seen this movie. There are a lot of big names in this movie and for some reason it never hit my radar. The name of the movie could possibly be a factor but oddly enough the name is pretty appropriate too.
This movie starts off with a horrific crime scene. We see this mysterious man entering into a very bloody scenario that's just wrapping up. The tension is high and you don't know what's going to happen. We don't even know who the players are as everyone's faces and voices are hidden from the audience.
We then get introduced to our hero Chris. Or so that's what they name him in this movie. He's a mild mannered accountant trying to do good. In this case he's helping out a struggling couple trying to keep their farm afloat. Immediately you can tell that he knows his ins and outs of the American taxation system.
During his explanation to this loving couple he kind of falls into a flashback. Here we see a little bit of his upbringing. We learn that he's an autistic person and his parents had issues with his development as a child. This crucial piece of information will explain his odd behavior as well as his superhuman ability to process logic and math.
We then cut to a scene with the top American treasury department representative, Ray. He basically blackmails another agent, Medina, to work a case for him. The case is to find more information on this mysterious accountant figure that is helping out organized crime leaders around the world. These pictures don't show the face of Chris but it's pretty obvious who it is.
Now that we know Chris is put on these high profile underworld accounting jobs he eventually gets hired on to work at some big tech company. Of course this tech company isn't on the up and up and Chris finds something that he shouldn't have found. This leads to a cat and mouse chase between some bad guys and the American treasury department.
This movie gets more fascinating as more information about Chris' past gets revealed. Layers of the movie continually get revealed although I don't think the audience is meant to figure it out themselves. Though the reveals are still a fun anticipation as the movie continues in their cat and mouse chase.
Though a bit on the predictable side they do some subtle things that keep us engaged with the movie. The actors all do a great job in all of its engaging scenes. I love how they carefully craft a lot of the scenes to make it feel like a mystery as to what is going to happen next. This helps really build the anticipation for the next big reveal.
There isn't a ton of special effects and shockingly not a ton of fight scenes either. Though the few fight scenes that they include are quite brutal and definitely give you a satisfying feel when things get down and dirty.
As I said before the title doesn't do this movie justice but it is very appropriate as a lot of the movie revolves around Chris' occupation as an accountant. The issue of the name of the movie is that it doesn't sound sexy at all. It's actually something they use in the movie. Due to the fact that Chris is an accountant everyone in the movie doesn't really suspect him of being anything other than an accountant. Unfortunately with this name a lot of people won't give this movie a chance.
Overall, I'm glad I finally got to check this movie out. I really wished I had seen this movie a long time ago when it first came out. It's actually a really fun movie to watch. Don't let the name fool you this is a wild ride that you will definitely enjoy. I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. They could have easily made this into a sequel or a TV show.
