My Review of "Edge of Tomorrow"

I've seen this movie multiple times and it never gets old.

Edge of Tomorrow is a science fiction action movie that was released back in 2014. At the time it didn't do too well. This was a time when Tom Cruise, who plays the main character, wasn't as popular as he is now. Some claim that this was the real reason for the box office disaster. It's really strange how society praises and demoralizes individuals all in such a short period of time. I loved this movie back then and I can safely say I still love this movie today.

The story starts out with a montage of a mysterious alien species that is tearing up Earth. All of the countries have joined forces to rid the world of these demonic alien creatures and unfortunately they're still losing. On the upside they do have a hero by the name of Rita who single-handedly defeated some aliens in a small city in France called Verdun.

Everyone is onto the next mission and our main character Cage is in charge of recruiting people to the good fight. Unfortunately for Cage the war efforts need every able bodied person in the fight. Cage is definitely not made for combat so he does anything to weasel himself out of it but to no avail. He is forcefully drafted to the front lines and only has a day to figure things out.

Unprepared and fearing his life he steps foot onto the battlefield and everything goes the way he thought it would. Everyone dies and he's next. The alien creatures somehow knew that they were all coming in for a surprise attack and decimates everyone! As a last ditch attempt to save his own life Cage gets blown to bits along with one of the aliens. Certain unexplained phenomenon happens and he's reverted back to the day that he is forcefully drafted into the frontlines.

It's up to Cage to figure out what is happening to him and how he can use this groundhog day superpower to win the war. Being the coward that he is, he's going to need all the help that he can get. Good thing Rita is available or else he's going nowhere.

It's hard to believe that this movie is almost a decade old but all of the special effects and sound engineering is top notch. I watched this in the new 4K blu-ray with the Atmos sound and I was blown away. I've purchased this movie on many occasions. This is probably one of the best ways of watching it. Yes it's even more entertaining than watching it in 3d and I didn't think it was going to be topped.

What really keeps you in this movie is the character growth of Cage. He starts out as a quivering wimp to a total badass. It's all understandable as well. You don't have this sense of no that doesn't make sense even though it's a popcorn action flick. All of the supporting characters have great personalities as well. Although they're all side characters they really have life on the screen.

To top this off I love the artistic angle they went with this movie. A lot of the costume designs and the beautifully haunting settings are right on the mark. They really put you into the full haunting environment of this movie.

Although it's mostly a serious movie there are a lot of light moments for levity. A lot of the jokes come from the incompetence of Cage in his growth as a soldier. There are also some fun times with some of his supporting cast as well though.

Overall, this is one of my favorite science fiction movies of all time. The pacing and the joy that this movie brings as I'm watching it never gets dull. I have watched this movie several times and each time is just as enjoyable as the last. That's why I have to give this movie a 9 out of 10. It is something you really have to check out if you haven't seen it yet. There's too much fun to be had with this one.
