My Review of "Running Point: Season One"
This is a fun TV show about an aristocratic family that owns a basketball team.

Running Point: Season One is a surprising TV show for me. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. They hooked me in with a fish out of water tale in sports. Then they reeled me in with the family dynamics of the team as well as the zany family behind the team. It's not meant to be a high concept show. I wouldn't say it's at the same level as Ted Lasso because they actually go deeper into the sport. This is more at the surface level with feel good scenarios.
The show starts off with a narration of the Gordon family. There is a very male chauvinistic history behind the family. That's mainly because of the times they grew up in. They have now entered the 2020s and life is a lot different. Their chauvinistic father had also passed away recently. In his stead, he appointed the oldest brother Cam as the president of their prestigious basketball team, The Waves.
Cam then gets into a scandalous accident forcing him to vacate the presidency of the team. He decides to appoint Isla as the new president. Since Isla is a woman, she takes undue criticism from everyone as the new president. The stakes are high but she's studied the job all her life. She knows what it takes to make a great team. This TV show is basically about her overcoming obstacles to get the team successful again.
We don't necessarily get that throughout the season. We have more exploration of her family dynamics as well as how she is able to balance her work and home life. She is surrounded by brothers and she loves them but they do stupid things because they're rich and entitled. They even have a surprise family member show up at their doorsteps mid season.
To add to the family dynamics they kind of focus on certain members of the team. They're able to kind of keep the basketball element in the show but there isn't a great emphasis on it. There's more focus on the life of a wealthy family. They aren't the best type of people but they mean well. They're all sort of that brat kid that you still like despite the fact they always do stupid things.
All this is okay with me because the relationship aspect of this show is where the core is at. The whole cast has a great rapport with one another and they are amiable on camera. Each of them are somewhat multilayered and have different motivations that help drive the overall story.
Each episode is tightly written to be self contained but still flow from one episode to the next. It's a little soap opera like but I liked that about this show.
Some people might also like the fact that they have a lot of celebrity cameos in this show. I caught a few of them but I'm sure I missed out on a lot.
One of the peculiar things about the end of this show is that it kind of ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. There are a lot of loose ends that need to be tied up and they can only be answered with another season. Seeing as this is a Netflix series that doesn't always happen. I'm hoping that this show is popular enough that they are able to resolve some of these matters.
I didn't find this show gut wrenchingly funny but there are a lot of funny moments. I found the cast did a good job with their comedic timing to deliver these jokes.
Overall, I had fun with this show. I think it's kind of a mind numbing comedy that will make you feel better after a hard days work. It's kind of a fluff show but with a little extra content. I would want to watch the next season of this show. I'll give this season a 6.5 out of 10.
