My Review of "Happy Gilmore 2"

I don't think anyone asked for this movie but I think it delivered everything that we would have expected for a sequel.

Happy Gilmore 2 is an unexpected sequel to a very loved movie. It's almost 30 years from the first movie and I don't think anyone expected a sequel for this movie. Of course, Netflix, the kings of sequels we never expected, had to intervene. Despite everyone's worry, I think this is everything they would have expected for the sequel.

The movie starts out with a bit of a background of who Happy Gilmore is. If you haven't seen the first movie, I don't know why you're watching this movie first. It constantly reminds us of things that happened in the first movie to make us understand the references in this movie. I sort of appreciated this. The movie did come out 30 years ago. As a casual viewer, I'm not going to memorize everything that happened in that movie. I may rewatch the movie to recap but it's unlikely.

They explain what's happened in the last 30 years. Happy and his wife had 5 kids and were living the life. One day Happy accidentally kills his wife while playing golf and has a total breakdown. He's now an alcoholic and his life is in ruins. The only thing holding him together is his family. Fortunately for him, his kids are great. Though his 4 sons are a bit rough around the edges, they all mean well.

His daughter, Vienna, has talent to become a great ballerina. To help her out she has to go to Paris to learn from the greats. This is going to cost tons of money and of course the only way to get that money fast is through golf. This is basically a paint by colors formula for a lot of Happy Madison productions and sports movies. We kind of know this because they've been doing this for years and we keep watching them.

All of the bonkers, non sensical humor is here from the original movie. They retread a lot of those jokes and that could be a good thing and a bad thing. Adam Sandler movies are kind of like this and we tend to love them even though they're the same. That's how memes work and other low brow humor works. They don't have to be crazy complicated. He puts just enough twist in there to keep them somewhat fresh each time.

If you're not an Adam Sandler fan you might not get into this type of humor and that's okay too. It's not for everyone and I can totally understand that point of view. I fit in as a fan of Adam Sandler so I got it and totally got into it. It also helps if you watch this movie with other fans. You'll all get the references and it's pretty much a bonding experience. You're all in the inner circle of laughs and it's pretty much a vibe.

There are a few fun twists and turns that help keep this movie fresh. The cameos are plentiful and non stop. If you're well versed in pop culture, it almost becomes a game of who do you recognize. That's all part of the fun as well because there are some faces from their previous movies that you haven't seen for a long time and you're like, I know that person!

It's not all glowing colors for this movie though. As much as I had fun with this movie there were a few lulls in the movie. At times, I felt it was a bit much but again that's par for the course with these type of movies.

Overall, I had a great time with this. There is a lot of nostalgia factor involved with this but if you watch this with a group of Sandler fans this is a great time. It's an acquired taste for some but fortunately I have the taste for it. I have to give it a 6.5 out of 10. I don't think I'll repeat watch this one but it is something that I would recommend to Sandler fans.
