My Review of "Kenan: Season one"

A rough start but very nice landing for this first season of Kenan.

Kenan is a brand new 2021 comedy series that came out on NBC. You may already know Kenan Thompson of Saturday Night Live fame. He's also had a pretty extensive resume of comedic movies and TV shows before that. Now he's venturing off to do sitcoms.

The season starts off a little rocky. It's an introduction to all of the characters. We of course have Kenan but we have to understand his situation. Kenan is a widower with 2 young daughters. He lives with his brother Gary and his father-in-law Rick. Workwise he works for the third best morning show in the city.

It starts off really slow. I was worried too because it didn't seem like a show that I would continue to want to watch but I had faith in Kenan because of the pedigree behind the scenes. They had to find themselves and that's what they did in each proceeding episode. In the beginning all of the characters didn't really have any point to them.

All of the characters had this free spirit vibe about them and I guess Kenan was the grounded person that balanced out the stories but it didn't quite work. That is until we started to meet his co-workers at his morning show. We learn he has a loving boss that grows as a great character throughout the season. Then we have the obvious cartoonish side characters that work with him as well.

They don't do too much to build up some substance to a lot of the side characters in this season and I really hope in the upcoming season they do. I can see some potential in a few of the characters. Just don't bring up too many new characters next season or else it'll get really bogged down.

I think it was close to the midpoint of the season that I started to understand the show. We learn that Kenan is a man of priorities and devotion. Those priorities and devotions are his Achilles heel throughout the season and they have fun with it. Once they pinpointed this it started to become a fun show to watch. He's an everyday Charlie Brown character that we want to root for in the end.

I'm glad that they started to find their footing by the end of the season. This way the next season won't be so rough and it gives the show some opportunity to highlight some of the other characters as well. It took them long enough to get us to care about Kenan I just hope that they learned their lessons and are able to put an emphasis on all the other characters as well in the next coming season.

They also brought up the old will they or won't they relationship with Kenan and a female character on the show. I thought that this build up was pretty organic rather than the usual love at first sight cliché. This was probably developed as the writers were trying to discover what this show was going to be.

Overall, it was a very tough start but as the ball got rolling I started to become charmed by all of the characters on the show. That's how it is with shows with brand new franchises. They have to introduce the characters in entertaining ways. With new shows like this it's very difficult because they're only given a certain amount of episodes to make it work with the audiences. I have to give this season a 6.5 out of 10. If you can get past the first few episodes then you'll notice that the show starts to grow on you.
