My Review of "Godmothered"

A family friendly title that looks at fairy tales in more modern times.

Godmothered was a late 2020 entry for Disney Plus. It was released around the Christmas holidays but I never got around to watching it until now. It fits a lot of Disney tropes that you're familiar with but with a modern twist. I'm seeing more and more of this from the company. This gives the giant company new ways of telling similar tales from the past.

The movie starts out innocently enough with a godmother named Agnes narrating the movie. She explains the rules of the world of godmothers and soon introduces us to one of our main protagonists, Eleanor.

Eleanor is a naïve wide eyed godmother to be. She's learning the ropes of being a godmother but has issues learning some of the spells. Unfortunately for her with the world we live in now, there's less need for godmothers. It looks as though the godmother academy is going to have to close down and they're all going to have to be tooth fairies instead.

That's not what Eleanor has in mind. She looks through a list to see if she can help a young girl and earn her godmother status. In her frantic search for a worthy young woman she finds a young red headed girl named Mackenzie. Eleanor's plan is to find Mackenzie and help her find her true love so she can live happily ever after.

After a series of missteps Eleanor finally gets to the earth realm and discovers that Mackenzie is not a young girl anymore. She's a fully grown adult with kids. Of course this poses a huge obstacle for Eleanor but she's up to the challenge.

That's pretty much where the movie starts and as it continues it does prove to be a wild and wacky family adventure. I would have thought that the Eleanor character would have drove me nuts with her fish out of water act. Instead it sort of felt similar to the movie Elf where Buddy was having issues navigating New York. This time it's Eleanor trying to navigate Boston. She has a sweet innocence to her character that you just can't get angry with.

I thought maybe the kids would have started to drive me nuts too but the kids in this movie are remarkably likeable and never annoying. They are great kids that have their own issues but never throw tantrums or cause problems. I kind of think that they could have did more with the daughter Mia. Most of the attention is concentrated on the daughter Jane.

It's too bad that I didn't watch this movie during the holiday season because it would have felt a little more at home to watch it then. The movie still works outside of the holiday season but it definitely feels like a Christmas movie.

There are pretty good messages in this movie as well. Obviously it's a Disney movie so there's going to be a syrup like happy ending but they talk about how we should be happy for the things we have in life. A lot of the things that Eleanor was taught at the school of Godmothers is based on material and status. She will find that those things aren't necessarily the things that we should be striving for. Things we live for might already be in front of us and we lost track of what's important.

Overall, this movie is a really fun time from start to finish. There are a few sappy parts but you have to understand the target audience and who made the movie. It's nothing incredibly mind-blowingly new but they do everything correctly. I have to give this movie a 7 out of 10. It is a good movie that would turn even more special if you watch it during the holidays.
