My Review of "Death to 2020"
A Netflix special about how 2020 wasn't so special for all of us.

Death to 2020 is a Netflix mocumentary that is based on reality. It's pretty much a rundown of the events of 2020 at the end of the year. Everyone's talked about it for the whole year and Netflix is trying to capitalize on the buzz that's going around right now. I don't blame them as it's pretty much on everyone's mind all the time and it's hard not to think about how bad the year has been for everyone.
This movie starts off with an interview with some fictional characters to set the mood of the film. They are pretty much help jump start how badly the year started. It goes into the forest fires of Australia. The fictional characters along with the narrator come up with some pretty fun jokes about the situation. All of the jokes are pretty dark in nature but I think most of us understand the type of humor they're going for.
All of the fictional characters are supposed to be serious characters but they say the must absurd and wackiest things in contrast to the situation that they're talking about. Things turn around when they talk to one of the fictional scientists where the scientist is aware of the B-footage that is being played over his explanation. The footage is hilariously out of sync with the seriousness of his explanations.
All in all it is pretty wacky and fun. They make fun of everything especially Trump. Whatever happened in this year is being roasted by this film but I was hoping that they'd go into more topics than just Trump. The majority of the movie is based on the crazy antics of Trump. Admittingly, there was a ton of things to be said about the crazy things that Trump has done but I thought they'd go into different things that happened around the world because we are well aware of the things that happened in America.
To be fair to the writers of the film it only makes sense to focus on America because that was the major focus of 2020 this year. Still there wasn't much talk about about the crazy fires in California that were caused by some sort of gender reveal party. There was that whole murder hornet thing that happened earlier in the year, billionaires getting richer, the release of UFO videos from the pentagon and a slew of other things that could have been talked about as well.
They touch on a lot of things in the beginning which gave me hope for this special but then they got into the US politics and it never shied away from the topic afterwards. I'm actually startled at how much can happen in one year when everyone is indoors for the majority of the time.
Still this is quite funny at times. There are a number of pretty big celebrities that play the fictional characters in this movie and there are a number of stand outs that really got me laughing. I would say that Hugh Grant's oblivious professor character had me howling in laughter every time he was on camera. Another huge standout was Lisa Kudrow's white house representative. She finds excuses for everything even though she's contradicting herself. All of the actors did a great job in their characters though.
Some of the angles were pretty hilarious but there are certain areas of the film that felt a little preachy. That's to be expected when you're talking about politics though. I guess it sort of felt that way especially because they focused so much on the politics portion of 2020.
Overall, I would say that this was a fun little ride down memory lane. I always love watching year end recaps of pretty much anything so that's why I knew I was going to like it no matter what. Even though 2020 wasn't so great it was nice to remember some of the things that we overcame in the past year. I have to give this film a 7 out of 10. I would say some would have fun watching this movie but it's probably a one viewing only kind of experience.
