Chief Balogun

Chief Michael Olasubomi "Subomi" Balogun is a Yoruba banker and philanthropist who also happens to be the founder of very popular and successful Nigerian bank, First City Merchant Bank, a company that later became the FCMB group. He also served as a long-time member of the council of the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

A Brief Biography about Chief Balogun.

He was born on the 9th of March, 1934 making him now at the time of this writing, 86 years old!

He graduated from Igbobi College and studied Law at London School of Economics. While studying in London, Chief Balogun regularly attended several fellowships through which he had the opportunity to meet some very notable Nigerians including former Nigerian president, Yakubu Gowon.

After earning his law degree, Chief Balogun returned to Nigeria to join the Ministry of Justice, Western Region. From the regional Ministry of Justice where he was a Crown Counsel, he found a new post as a Parliamentary Counsel in the Federal Ministry of Justice. After the January 1966 coup, Chief Balogun joined the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank. It was here that his interest in investment banking led him to advocate for the establishment of a merchant bank sponsored by NIDB.

When ICON securities, a merchant banking outfit was established in 1973 as a subsidiary of NIDB, Chief Balogun moved to ICON Ltd as a director of operations but when his intention to head ICON was not realized, he left the firm to found City Securities, a stock broking and issuing house. City Securities went on to develop relationships with Mobil, Texaco and Total petroleum marketing companies, handling the companies equity offerings.

In 1979, he applied for a merchant banking license to establish First City Merchant Bank. When the operations of the bank took effect in 1983, Chief Balogun established an entrepreneurial culture at the bank, unique as an owner managed bank in contrast to the government owned banks at the time.

Chief Balogun has also built a National Pediatric Centre in Ijebu-Ode which he donated to the University of Ibadan's College Teaching Hospital. He is also the father to five children, four of which are still alive today.
