Marvel Confirms Elizabeth Olsen Will Return To The MCU This Year

Elizabeth Olsen Returns as Scarlet Witch in Marvel Zombies

By Dena Falken EsqPublished 4 months ago 3 min read

Elizabeth Olsen is officially reprising the role of the Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the series Marvel Zombies. Following her tragic fate at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022, audience members have made it loud and clear that they are not ready to be done with Wanda Maximoff in the MCU timeline.

While The Multiverse Saga has only a handful of movies left, the rest of Marvel Studios' 2025 releases are some of their remaining TV shows. The final animated series for the MCU this year will be Marvel Zombies, which serves as a What If...? spinoff, and will consist of four episodes, similar to Eyes of Wakanda.

Marvel Studios has released a brand-new trailer for Marvel Zombies, which includes several returns of various popular MCU heroes and villains. The footage also includes a close look at Olsen's Scarlet Witch return, but with a massive twist. Check out the full trailer below for the series, which premieres on September 24 on Disney+:

What The Marvel Zombies Trailer Reveals

As the Marvel Zombies animated series takes place outside the 616 canon, the trailer focuses on a reality where the Avengers are forced to tackle a terrible zombie plague. However, like most zombie stories, many fall to the plague, while the survivors now having to deal with this new reality, which is easier said than done.

The Marvel Zombies cast who get featured throughout the trailer include Iman Vellani's Ms. Marvel, Hailee Steinfeld's Hawkeye, Florence Pugh's Black Widow, and many more, as they go up against zombie versions of Captain America, Okoye, Namor, and Clint Barton. Following the reveal that Todd Williams will be voicing a Moon Knight version of Blade, the footage also sees him in action, including his first dialogue.

Olsen's Scarlet Witch can be seen as another fallen Avenger, and given the power of her chaos magic, it makes her once again one of the most dangerous threats to the remaining heroes. With all episodes dropping on the same day, viewers will not have to wait weekly to see what happens to the zombie-fied Avengers.

Our Take On The Marvel Zombies Trailer

As Marvel Studios has always been solid with its animated properties, the Marvel Zombies trailer offers a unique take on the MCU, especially in the era of The Multiverse Saga, where they have room to visit these alternative stories. With animation not having to worry about the same budget costs as the films have to, there is more freedom for the Phase 6 series.

Seeing a new and undead version of Wanda is bound to be one of the biggest takeaways from the show, as she is likely going to be one of the more challenging zombies to deal with throughout the four episodes. The bigger question, however, is when Olsen's Scarlet Witch will be back in live-action.

Marvel Zombies also creates an opportunity to showcase newer characters in high-stakes scenarios. For example, Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye, and Black Widow stepping into the spotlight against zombie counterparts gives younger heroes a chance to prove themselves. This dynamic could help establish their importance moving forward in future live-action stories.

With this also being the last animated show for 2025, the Phase 6 entry is arriving at the perfect time for the fall season. As Marvel Zombies premiere on Disney+ in just a few weeks, it won't be long until the world gets to see perhaps the darkest take on the Avengers in the MCU.

In the bigger picture, Marvel Zombies could also influence how Marvel approaches its future animated projects. If successful, this bold step into horror could inspire more experimentation across genres, ensuring that the MCU continues to evolve beyond the traditional superhero formula.
