Marielle's Top 10 Best 2024 Movies
I had a tough time choosing my favorites this year.

Welcome to the Best Movies of 2024. I have to admit - I had a tough time choosing my favorites this year. I have no idea what I would do without movies. This year has helped me discover more of my passion. First, I’ll talk about the movies that have already been released before talking about 2024 films.
Other Films
Cas & Dylan (2013), Director: Jason Priestley, Actors: Tatiana Maslany, Richard Dreyfuss
5. Cas & Dylan was the first movie I watched in 2024. It’s a funny, sweet, and poignant film about road travel and unexpected friendship. Tatiana Maslany and Richard Dreyfuss are the ultimate tag team as they get under each other's last nerve or learn from each other in this adventure. One of the best lessons from this film is that we’re allowed to mess up, and we’ll figure life out.
4. A Long Way Down (2014), Director: Pascal Chaumeil, Actors: Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette
This is the mental health movie we need. A Long Way Day stars a strong quartet of actors, including Toni Collette and Pierce Brosnan. A Long Way Down centers around an important topic that has garnered more attention since this film’s release. Despite its dark appeal, the film is both tear-jerking and heartwarming.
3. 10 Items or Less (2006), Director: Brad Silberling, Actors: Morgan Freeman, Paz Vega
Behold - a movie found in the museum of underrated gems. Morgan Freeman and Paz Vega have a fun chemistry, sharing several conversations on their adventures, like a trip to Target. It’s also a very different role to see Freeman in who was hilarious. 10 Item or Less is a comedy filled with surprises and I wish I could watch it for the first time again.
2. The Big Year (2011), Director: David Frankel, Actors: Jack Black, Steve Martin
I loved The Big Year. This was the second bird movie I watched this year and I learned a lot about the craft. Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson made the ultimate team - especially Martin and Black who shared a memorable celebration dance. The Big Year is the definition of comedy, adventure, and making connections.
1. The Ultimate Playlist of Noise (2021), Director: Bennett Lasseter, Actor: Keean Johnson
This has become my new favorite movie. What is the most unforgettable sound you have ever heard? The Ultimate Playlist of Noise encourages us to chase dreams and appreciate life. Marcus’s project bequeaths how vital sound is and how we should not underestimate it. It’s one of the most poignant and real films so check it out.
2024 Films
5. A Real Pain, Director: Jessie Eisenberg, Actors: Jessie Eisenberg, Keiran Culkin
I have never felt emotion pour out of a film like A Real Pain. Jessie Eisenberg and Keiran Culkin are fantastic in their roles, especially Culkin who soaked himself in this complicated headspace. A Real Pain is Jessie Eisenberg’s second film as director and writer. The film is funny, deep, and occupies themes about mental health and relationships.
4. Out of My Mind, Director: Amber Sealey, Actors: Phoebe-Rae Taylor, Luke Kirby
Out of My Mind is a hopeful film that gives everyone the voice they need. It's an authentic portrayal of disabilities and standing up for you. Despite her disability, Melody never gives up and shows everyone that nobody’s voice should ever be muted. The film has a powerful ending that made me tear up.
3. My Old Ass, Director: Megan Park, Actors: Maisy Stella, Aubrey Park
What would you ask if you ever talked with your past or future self? My Old Ass is a creative coming-of-age film that made me reflect on my own life. Maisy Stella and Aubrey Plaza transform these roles into compassionate leaders for anyone searching for themselves. It’s one of the best self-discovering films I have seen this year.
2. Ghostlight, Directors: Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson, Actor: Keith Kupferer
Ghostlight is a poignant story that uses the world of theater to its highest potential. Grief is not an easy emotion to depict, but the actors do an incredible job with their transformation. Ghostlight is a relatable film that also made me feel a sense of peace. One of the greatest parts of cinema is how it helps viewers resolve complicated situations.
1. Wicked, Director: Jon M. Chu, Actors: Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande
Best theater experience of 2024! I had my doubts about Wicked, but it was a fantastic time. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are both terrific in their performances. The musical numbers are a highlight and the film adds fresh elements. I was in awe and smiling the entire time until my cheeks hurt.
And with that 2024 has come to a close. Thank you all so much for reading my reviews. Using this space has allowed me to talk about movies and discover new things. Have a safe and happy New Year and I will see you with more reviews in 2025.
