Logan Review (2017)

A quick but extensive review of the Wolverine finale film Logan.

By Nathaniel CourtisPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

For my reviews i tend to rank a few important categories for a film and then combine every ranking to achieve an average which leads to my final score. I looked extensively at everything in Logan and here are my review scores for it.

Characterisation: 8.5/10

Logan: 9.5/10

Charles Xavier: 9.2/10

Laura: 8.7/10

Pierce: 7/10

Caliban: 8/10

Themes: 9/10

Logan deals with some very realistic themes in very smart and creative ways and are some of the best we’ve seen in the comic book genre. Themes of Fear, Depression, Redemption, Family, Mortality, being your own person and so on. Logan is one of the best comic book movies when it comes to themes.

Storytelling: 9/10

The story starts with Logan beating the crap out of some thugs… “So? We’ve seen it so many times before, who cares?” But this is different from the mindless action in X-Men Origins Wolverine my dear friend. The amount of show not tell in the opening scene is amazing and is one of the best openings in comic book movie history. It shows a dark atmosphere with a bunch of petty thugs beating on a car with some culturally different music to fit the tone of what’s happening. Logan appears to be hungover gets out of the car and gets shot. But as the logo for the film appears, we see he’s not healing properly and that’s when we the viewer goes “Oh shit, that actually could’ve killed him” it shows that he’s in a weakened old state and it shows us what the movie is going to be about and it brings a lot of tension to the scene which is great. He tries to pull out the claws but fails to bring out one of them but then gets beaten to a pulp until he rages out and that’s when the film shows us why the R rating is in this movie and what to expect from the movie. Scenes like this are throughout the entire movie and it’s absolutely brilliant. Combine that with amazing pacing, not one scene felt overly long and we have a brilliantly told comic book film.Has a great set up, has a great confrontation and it certainly has a fantastic conclusion

Acting: 9/10

Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart are easily the highlights and are some of the best performances from the actors I’ve seen. Dafne Keen, Stephen Merchant and Boyd Holbrook did outstanding performances too. Easily a great acted movie.

Cinematography: 8/10

I’m conflicted on this one, on one hand, there wasn’t anything wrong with Logan’s cinematography, it was actually quite good. But on the other hand, there wasn’t really any outstanding moments with the camera that made me get goosebumps like the Batman films. To be honest the best shots of the film are in the posters. If the cinematography in the film was like the film’s posters it would be an easy 9 even 9.5/10.

James Mangold whenever he's made a film has never really had the best cinematography, it's still good, but i don't think it's his strong suit

I know he doesn’t do the cinematography, but he has an idea of where he wants the camera positioned

Editing: 8.5/10

This film has good editing, a few scenes could’ve had maybe a bit more coherent editing but nothing major. It's still pretty good

Music/Score: 9/10

HOLY SHIT HAVE YOU HEARD THIS SCORE?!? IT’s SO FUCKING GOOD

Final Review Score:

and with that i give Logan an 8.9/10. It's a very good film that deserves all the attention it gets, it's not my personal favourite comic book film, but it's definitely up there.
