Will Yoshi be in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?

Super Mario Galaxy Movie

The brand-new trailer for the Super Mario Galaxy movie just dropped, and I’ve got to say — it looks insanely good. But here’s the wild part… it doesn’t even feel like a straight-up Mario Galaxy adaptation.

Almost everything shown pulls inspiration from across the entire Mario franchise. We’re talking heavy nods to Super Mario Bros. 2, Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, tons of Mario Odyssey, and yes — even a bunch of Yoshi’s Island throwbacks.

The trailer may be short, but there’s an unbelievable amount packed into it. So let’s break it all down and go scene by scene to uncover all the Easter eggs, references, and wild moments you might’ve missed.

The Bros Ride Into Toast Arena

The trailer kicks off with Mario and Luigi back on their dirt bikes, pulling off tricks as they speed toward Toast Arena.

This looks like their fun, action-packed way of getting called in for another job — and even Mario’s bike stunt is a direct callback to Mario Kart Wii.

Right away, we spot something massive: one of the iconic inverted pyramids has crashed straight into the sand.

If you look closely, there’s a familiar symbol on the front — belonging to Knuck, the boss from Super Mario Odyssey who guarded the giant wedding ring.

The fallen pyramid nearly wiped out the entire city.

Toast Arena Looks Straight Out of Mario Odyssey

Next, we see the Bros roll into town, and the layout is almost identical to Toast Arena from Odyssey.

  • The fountain in the center
  • The wide streets
  • The towering poles lining the road

The only big difference? This time, the city isn’t frozen solid.

The Toast Arenans are back too — and they’re in trouble.

Apparently, there’s a massive drain blockage, and somehow it’s connected to the pyramid crashing from the sky.

Yeah… that part still feels a little confusing.

Inside the Inverted Pyramid

Just like in the game, Mario and Luigi head straight into the pyramid.

In the background, we even spot a Moi — those shy sand creatures from the Sand Kingdom that you could capture in Odyssey to reveal hidden platforms.

The Bros grab a Fire Flower and transform into their classic fire forms:

  • Mario in red and white
  • Luigi in green and white

The glow helps them see through the dark tunnels.

Then Luigi runs into a Buzzy Beetle with glowing red eyes as the classic underground theme plays.

Honestly, I can’t remember if we saw Buzzy Beetles in the first movie — but either way, it’s awesome to see them back.

A Suspiciously Long Bridge (Boss Fight Incoming?)

The brothers then walk across a massive bridge deep inside the ruins.

And here’s the thing… it feels way too long and empty.

In Super Mario Odyssey, a very similar bridge appears right before the boss battle with Knuck.

There are even symbols scattered across the broken building at the end of the bridge that look like Knuck’s markings.

My guess? Nintendo cut a boss reveal from the trailer.

I wouldn’t be shocked if Knuck drops from the ceiling in the actual movie.

Yoshi Hiding in the Pipe

Eventually, the Bros clear the blocked pipe full of rocks and debris.

Inside, they find glowing eyes…

And surprise — it’s Yoshi hiding in there.

Was he hiding from some kind of threat?

Your guess is as good as mine.

But his reveal leads straight into some of the strangest scenes in the entire trailer.

Mario and Peach Enter a Castle Gauntlet

Suddenly, we jump to Mario and Peach navigating what looks like a massive castle filled with traps.

This area feels pulled straight from classic Mario castle levels.

We see:

  • Spinning fire bars from Mario Bros.
  • Message blocks from Super Mario World
  • What looks like a Bullet Bill or King Bill launcher
  • Glowing energy rising up staircases

The sky outside even has the same glowing aura from Bowser Jr.’s invasion in the first trailer.

It’s possible this is some kind of floating fortress or gauntlet brought in by Bowser Jr.

And honestly, it’s about time we finally get proper Mario castle levels in the movies.

Classic Mario Trap Madness

Things quickly turn into full-on Mario Maker chaos.

Peach and Mario dodge:

  • Giant saw blades sliding through floors and ceilings
  • Spike pillars slamming down from above
  • Spike traps lining the walls

There even appear to be enemies waiting at the end of the hallway — possibly Hammer Bros, Sledge Bros, or even Sumo Bros.

This entire sequence screams classic Mario platforming.

Luigi Goes Full Frog Suit Hero

Next up, we see a giant Cheep Cheep leap out of a pond and straight-up eat Toad.

Naturally, Luigi steps up.

He hits a Question Block and pulls out the iconic Frog Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3.

The whole scene takes place in a colorful jungle area that looks heavily inspired by Yoshi’s Island — complete with bright bushes, trees, and even a Yoshi egg-themed boat in the background.

Luigi then frog-stomps the Cheep Cheep to save Toad.

Now technically, that’s not even a move from the games — the Frog Suit is meant for high jumps and swimming — but hey, it still looks awesome.

Oddly enough, it’s a blue Toad being rescued this time.

No idea why he’s here.

Peach Takes on Mario Bros. 2 Enemies

We swing back to Peach in that casino-like area teased in the first trailer.

And wow… she’s basically fighting the entire cast of Super Mario Bros. 2.

You can spot:

  • Birdo firing egg projectiles
  • The Clawgrip boss in the background
  • Mouser knocked out on the floor

There are slot machines made of Question Blocks, a Koopa Troopa running one of the tables, and Boomerang Flowers flashing on the screens.

The whole place feels like a mashup of:

  • Super Mario Sunshine’s casino
  • Luigi’s mini-game casinos

Even the coin coffers are back — but now in green, red, and even blue variations.

Peach absolutely wrecks everyone here, and honestly… Birdo looks better in this movie than she ever has in the games.

Finally… Some Real Mario Galaxy Enemies

At last, we get a glimpse of actual Mario Galaxy creatures.

In the background, you can see:

  • Octos
  • Tons of Octumbas
  • Possibly even a Spike enemy (first time spotted in the movie so far)

It’s nice to finally see the Galaxy side of things coming through.

Midair Battles with Lakitus

Then we get an epic aerial scene with Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi fighting Lakitus as they toss Spinies from the clouds.

It’s unclear where this takes place:

  • Above the Mushroom Kingdom?
  • The Cloud Kingdom from Odyssey?
  • Some brand-new sky world?

But the detail is perfect.

When Yoshi jumps off a Lakitu, the cloud remains behind — just like in the games.

Another cool callback.

And once again… they’re protecting that blue Toad for some reason.

The Star Festival and a Mystery Gift

Next, we arrive at what looks like the Star Festival.

Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi approach Toad, and Mario is holding a long wrapped present.

At first glance, I honestly thought it was a gun.

But later scenes suggest it might actually be Princess Peach’s parasol — which she uses while fighting Birdo.

The colors match perfectly.

Toad is holding what looks like a candied apple — possibly even a Yoshi fruit — which Yoshi quickly eats with his classic tongue sound.

Yoshi makes his familiar noises, though his voice sounds slightly different this time.

Also… some of his facial expressions are low-key terrifying.

Anyone else creeped out?

Carnival Easter Eggs Everywhere

In the background of the festival, there’s a tent with what looks like a giant King Boo symbol — a creepy mirror-house style attraction maybe?

There’s also:

  • A massive ice cream cone stand
  • Star-shaped cotton candy
  • And one Toad who looks like he might be missing an arm (seriously, what?)

This scene is packed with tiny details.

Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, and a SNES Light Gun?!

Now here’s where things get wild.

We suddenly see:

  • Toad holding baby Mario and baby Luigi
  • Yoshi guarding them with a SNES Super Scope light gun

Yes. That giant Nintendo gun from the early ‘90s.

This is a clear reference to Yoshi’s Safari and Yoshi’s Island.

Though technically Mario used the gun in Yoshi’s Safari — not Yoshi himself — but still, the callback is awesome.

Why are Mario and Luigi babies?

No clue.

My money’s on Kamek messing with magic again.

The Odyssey T-Rex Makes a Return

And just when things couldn’t get crazier…

The massive T-Rex from Super Mario Odyssey shows up.

Yep. That same terrifying dinosaur.

It even tries to attack Yoshi — another dinosaur — which is kind of hilarious.

Yoshi tries to protect the babies, but everyone ends up running for their lives.

The Gateway Galaxy Poster Reveal

At the very end of the trailer, we finally get what we’ve been waiting for.

A poster revealing Gateway Galaxy — the very first planet from Super Mario Galaxy where Mario meets Rosalina.

But this version is way bigger than we remember.

Instead of just a small meeting spot, it looks like a full planet with:

  • Villages
  • Trees
  • Courtyards
  • Brick roads leading to a massive palace

The pedestal where Mario first met Rosalina is now part of a huge castle structure.

We also see jagged rocky formations and multiple spaceships flying toward the planet — including a cluster of red rockets.

Are there other civilizations here besides Rosalina and the Lumas?

It sure seems like it.

And honestly… this is the space adventure vibe we’ve been waiting for.

Final Thoughts on the Super Mario Galaxy Movie Trailer

Even though the trailer is stuffed with references from all over the Mario universe, I absolutely love what I’m seeing.

Sure, I hope the movie isn’t just a chaotic mashup of random ideas like parts of the first film felt at times.

But as a lifelong Mario fan?

They could give me two straight hours of Easter egg madness and I’d still be happy.

There’s clearly a lot they’re still hiding — especially when it comes to space and Galaxy content.
