Sonic Lost World (2013)

Version Played - Wii U

Sonic Lost World, gee what a confusing game. I mean after the success of Colours, Generations and Unleashed with it re-inventing the formula. Lost World just completely ditches that gameplay style and goes for something completely new, with it taking inspiration from Mario Galaxy and Sonic X-Treme out of all games. This game usually gets a bad rap in reviews so let’s see if Sonic Lost World is any good.

Sonic Lost World unlike the previous 3 games goes for a brand new gameplay style, basically Sonic with a Run Button and yeah this definitely does not belong in a Sonic Game. Now i will say in hindsight that i do think that this proves that Sonic doesn't necessarily have to be extremely fast to be fun, But this is not the way to do it, i mean it controls fine but this is something that doesn’t belong in a Sonic game at all if anything it makes the game feel more like a mario game more than anything else and I think most people agree and He regains the spindash and i’m always up to having the spindash back it’s such a classic move that should have been in every game and one annoying thing in his play style is his jump.

Sonic’s jump in this game is very low and they fix it by adding a double jump, i mean in games like colours it was fine because his normal jump was at a good height, it was just there incase you messed up a jump, which is fine however here you can’t just fix a horribly low jump by adding another it just does not work for the level design and the last thing this game introduces are the Parkour Mechanics with the ability to run up walls or run on walls and i mean they are fine for the most part, well i mean the ability to run on walls horizontally isn’t very good but the ability to run up walls is an alright addition that doesn’t really take anything away from gameplay and now the wisps are back, i mean it’s cool to see them back and the new additions are cool and yeah that’s pretty much all i can say about the wisps it’s cool to see them back.

Now let’s talk about the levels, I'm not going to lie there are actually some creative ideas here for example remember the mine cart levels in Donkey Kong Country? Well in this game that idea is taken and used with Sonic’s ability to grind on rails, or what about frozen factory zone 3 with it’s pinball mechanics or silent forest zone 2 where it incorporates espionage gameplay and there’s so many other cool ideas but it’s just too bad the bad gameplay nearly ruins it, sonic’s low jump and run button honestly ruins a lot of these levels for me and that’s a shame because there really are some creative stages and we haven’t even talked about the DLC stages yet, the Yoshi's Island stage, The Legend of Zelda Stage and My Favourite that Nights Into Dreams level. That Yoshi Level pay homage to Yoshi’s Story and Yoshi’s Island and Wow is this a fun stage The Legend Of Zelda stage while i haven’t played too much Zelda i think people would appreciate the easter eggs and references here and as a stage itself it is very fun and of course that Nights Level so ok the only way to play this level is if you pre ordered the game and luckily I had a friend who had an unused code and he let me get this stage and the reason this is my favourite stage is because i love Nights Into Dreams it’s my favourite game on the Saturn and one of my favourite games period.

I just really like this game and to actually see it get represented here is just so awesome, sure someone could just say it’s a boss rush stage with some reskinned bosses so it looks like the bosses from Nights and sure you could say that but honestly i don’t care this stage is amazing not because of the bosses but just because Nights got some representation all the DLC stages are great and if you for some reason decide to get Sonic Lost World on The Wii U you should at the Very least get these DLC stages they are a lot of fun and honestly some of the best levels in the game, speaking of levels though this game also has 2D Sections and this could have been a good opportunity to bring back the classic sonic gameplay but nope it instead brings the same problems from the 3D part of the game and it honestly makes it some of the most boring parts of the game and of course the boss battles so in each world in usually zone 2 you are greeted to a mini boss now they are over so fast and can be taken down in 2 hits it’s not too bad and it doesn’t take anything away really from the main boss fights and then you get to the main boss fights and they are some of the worst parts of this game yeah this game introduces the deadly six, they bring you amazing boss fights like Zazz chasing you with a yellow ball, while he waits for you to defeat him. Amazing.

But in all seriousness though these bosses are so painfully easy that it’s just not even fun all of the deadly six have boring easy boss battles i mean it takes 3-4 hits to actually beat them and then the final boss is just a repeat of sonic colours. Oh and then you have a story and i’m going to be honest This story is horrible. Some of the reasons why it’s terrible is because first off these villains the deadly six are actually bad there is nothing interesting about them and there just not funny and I think out of all of them Zavok is the worst, he really does not have a personality except that he is a tough guy and here he’s basically a rip off bowser, heck even his boss fight is ripping off bowser and even then bowser had a lot of personality in the mario and luigi games.

But here Zavok and what i’m saying can be applied to the deadly six as a whole is just boring, stupid and uninspired and we haven’t even gotten to the main story yet what’s bad about the main story is the way it’s written, the story is a comedy and drama hybrid and of course it doesn’t work, all of the jokes told by the cast just cannot work in a story like this espically in one scene you have this happen. And then in the next scene this happens. and whenever a drama like this happens it doesn’t really work because of the way the story it’s handled and it sucks. Instead of a Comedy/Drama hybrid you could use this story to expand the friendship of Sonic and Tails and to give us more insight on that part of the series since it was done here a lot more than a lot of other games or they could make the deadly six more interesting or just not include them at all and you know maybe make the drama suit the characters more and tone down the comedy, it’s fine to have a little bit since Sonic is more of the sarcastic cool type character, but it comes a point where it’s too much and then this game also has multiplayer, i mean it’s fine, it's basically a race like in SA2 and Heroes except one uses a wii remote and the other uses the wii u gamepad. And i mean it’s fine it does leave a lot to be desired like more characters but it’s just okay, but here’s the thing, why would you ever play this with friends.

Overall Sonic Lost World was an alright experiment, with it’s mediocre gameplay, bad story and uninspired bosses, but it does have good music, unique level ideas and good DLC.

I give Sonic Lost World a 6.3/10.
