Little Miss Sunshine - A Movie Review

'Little Miss Sunshine' is a fun, relatable, and humorous story.

Okay, we’d better get moving, it’s a long drive. Do we have everybody?

After a long drive, Little Miss Sunshine was released to theaters in 2006. Learning that their daughter can compete in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant, a family has to figure out how to get there. Piling into one car, they travel across the country where endless adventures occur.

Movies about road travel are always my favorite. I did not know what to expect upon watching Little Miss Sunshine. It is a fun, relatable, and humorous story. Viewers get a look in the mirror at the life of a dysfunctional family. The journey delivers a thought-proking message.

Little Miss Sunshine would not be what it is without the exceptional talents of Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear, Abigail Breslin, Paul Dano, and Alan Arkin. To prepare for the film they actually went on a road trip in character.

They sold their chemistry in constant banter. It’s amazing how everyone is still sane during this long car ride with everyone getting on each other’s nerves. No family is perfect. Each member of the family is relatable, making you say to yourself, ‘Oh yes, that’s what my grandfather used to say.’

Each member of the cast gets a credible amount of screentime. Character depth was studied to its highest regard. You can always tell how Toni Collette is feeling based on her expressive countenance. At first, I was not fond of Richard’s (Kinnear) opinions, but you grow to like each character. There is something more.

At the time of the film’s release, Steve Carell was still an unknown actor. Out of all the interactions among the family, my favorite was between Carell and Dano. Taking a vow of silence, Dano was excellent in his emotional performance. It’s true that we all have a contrasting relationship with the members of our family.

Alan Arkin was my favorite. Saying whatever he pleases because he is old, the grandfather has a big heart. He has a tender moment with each member of the family telling them that they are more than what they think. No matter what, family will always hold your back.

Abigail Breslin was one of the youngest actresses to be nominated for the Best Supporting Actress award in 2006. Olive is a passionate young girl who is ready for any challenge. She teaches a lesson to all young girls that no matter what you look like, anyone can be a part of a pageant.

Little Miss Sunshine had the best moments of comedy. Expect a dinner table sequence because this film has an epic one. With everyone talking over each other and changing the conversation at every minute, it’s a film that makes you smile. I could tell that the writers had fun creating the dialogue. A conversation can be about anything.

However, it took a National Lampoon Vacation turn which was a bit distracting. Nevertheless, that did not take away from the emotion conveyed. Be warned that this is an emotional story.

Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris embarked on a film that is about growth. Sure, not all family members get along but you will never stop being a family. That’s the wonderful impact of road travel. Little Miss Sunshine had a wonderful balance in the journey of this story. They made the story as relatable as they could to deliver authenticity.

I highly recommend that you watch Little Miss Sunshine if you have not seen it. It has become one of my new favorite films that I’d watch again. Get the whole family together and enjoy a laugh.
