Journey into the World of Pirates: Baratie Arc

My thoughts watching through One Piece: Possible Spoilers

Episodes 19–30: Baratie Arc

So far this is my favorite Arc of One Piece. As someone who has worked in many kitchens, this is exactly what they are like. Whether you are the head chef or a line cook you all give each other a ton of crap but would also die for each other.

We now get the chance to learn about Zoro’s past. How he discovered his dream to become the world’s greatest swordsman and who he promised that dream to. It brought a lot of depth to his character and showed why he is laser-focused on his goal and trains hard every day to accomplish it.

It made me think of my grandma, random I know but hear me out. My grandma passed away when I was in my late teens and we were extremely close. We used to daydream together and talk about all the things we’d do together. She passed very suddenly and I didn’t even get the chance to say goodbye. This flashback made me think of all of those dreams that I had since forgotten and how I need to work hard to accomplish them not just for myself but to honor her memory.

Let’s start with the purpose of this arc to introduce my new favorite Sanji. A ladies-man chef who wants to see the all-blue. Out of the characters’ backstories, I think his story was the most intense. He was shipwrecked with a pirate for months and almost died a slow and painful death. Nothing bonds you more than shared trauma. His relationship with Zeff was built on a true connection. They knew they could say whatever they wanted to each other and they would still have each other backs when it mattered.

His fighting style however cracks me up. I get it they needed to be creative with a different style of fighting but only kicking looks hilarious. His cool personality, hands in his pockets, and then legs flying about are just a funny combination.

Whoever was in charge of casting for the live-action One Piece need to do all live-action adaptations. They nailed all the characters and got the perfect actor to play Sanji.

Unlike the Syrup village arc, I thought this one blew the live action out of the water. They were both still entertaining however the anime goes way more in-depth with all of the characters, the marines, and a pirate gang that wasn’t even in the live-action.

I thought Sanji bringing the pirates a meal just because they are hungry shows his character. Even though Don Krieg quickly becomes an enemy after being shown kindness. I think this is a huge hidden life lesson. We can’t judge people we can only do what we can to help them. Don Krieg took advantage of the help that was shown to him, on the other hand, his Combat Commander Gin was unable to follow his commands due to the kindness shown to him.

We are also introduced to the greatest swordsman Hawkeye Mihawk. Again whoever was in charge of casting for the live-action One Piece needs a raise. He made the most badass entrance and his calmness made his power shocking. Zoro jumped at the opportunity to face the person he had been looking for since he was a child. The fight didn’t last long but Hawkeye allowing Zoro to live showed he believed in Zoro’s potential. I hope to see more of Hawkeye in later episodes.

While all of this craziness is going on Nami just dips. She takes the ship and all of its treasures. We are now seeing more of her character and I know her story is up next. I am not a fan of hers so far, She is very self-centered and impulsive. Honestly, she is the only true pirate aboard the ship.

This Arc has the best fighting scenes. Zoro vs Hawkeye, Luffy vs Krieg, Sanji vs Gin, and the chefs vs the Don Krieg pirates it is jammed packed with different fighting styles and action.

Two awesome backstories, Our first look at the dangers of the Grand Line, a dozen new characters, epic fights, and the perfect ending. I got emotional at Sanji paying his respects to Zeff as he left to fulfill both of their dreams by joining the Strawhat pirates as their chef.

I have an idea of what the next arc will be like but I am not sure it will be able to top this one for me.

What were your thoughts on the Baratie Arc? Are you team Sanji or Zoro?

Reviving Ranma 1/2: Classic Anime Gets a Fresh Modern Look

I have wanted to watch Ranma 1/2 for as long as I can remember. The length was the only thing preventing me from starting it. With 161 episodes, 3 movies, and 12 OVAs I have been putting off that commitment for a while. To my surprise when I logged on to Netflix there was the first episode of a new remake. I put it on right away and I’m already excited for episode 2 to be released.
