Invented Marvel Characters: Chokepoint

Bringing my original comic characters to life with iPhone apps and zero artistic ability

By CKPublished 5 months ago 3 min read

Growing up my dream job was to be a comic book artist/writer. But with very little artistic talent that dream died pretty quickly. Now I do my best to bring my characters to life using apps like swordmaker, armormaker, you doodle and photo cutout. They don't always turn out looking very good but I get more excited about the concepts and stories behind the characters than how well I can make the character look good. Sometimes my characters are from cultures I am not a part of because I think it fits their story or other aspects about them. I am not a cultural expert but at the very least I hope no one is upset by me using aspects of cultures I'm not a part of and find interesting. That said below is my Marvel inspired character Chokepoint.

A former French soldier J.P. Morel was hired by Ulysses Klaw to oversee an operation based out of Kenya. This group of scientists and mercenaries' main goal was to undermine and rival Wakanda through a combination of research and theft. As such the military branch of this group aimed to steal vibranium, heart shaped herbs and other technology from Wakanda while scientists tried to replicate them from scratch or from the study of stolen samples. Despite very little success of stealing Wakandan resources the scientific department was able to create a super soldier formula and new forms of medicine while trying to imitate the effects of the heart shaped herb. Even with mercenaries empowered with super strength this operation could not manage to steal or break into Wakanda's vibranium reserves, and Klaw disowned the group viewing it as a failure. From there J.P. legitimized the group by turning it into a company called Vumbua International and becoming its CEO.

On the surface Vumbua International was a company on the rise, purchasing resources from Wakanda and profiting from experimental drugs, medicines and proprietary materials, but in secret it's security detail still sought to take Wakanda's resources illegally and was also engaging in mercenary work around the globe. Dawning a black, brown and grey costume and calling himself Chokepoint, J.P. would personally deal with the company's most important and lucrative mercenary contracts. Although proficient with most weaponry he sadistically prefers to strangle his victims and the resources of his company have given him the means to do so more effectively. Many doses of the artificial heart shaped herb has slowed his aging and made him strong enough to easily overpower non powered enemies. His body armour is lined with incredibly strong but lightweight grey plates his scientists developed when trying to imitate vibranium. His main weapons are retractable garrotes attached to a wristband on each arm. Chokepoint can use these to strangle opponents or swing the ends as blunt weapons.

Despite the mercenary work and commerce doing well for Vumbua International, they failed to steal or adequately replicate Wakanda's technology, vibranium or heart shaped herbs. Furthermore, their tech division faced secret theft and sabotage by a scientist he employed named Vic Vermeulen. Once discovered Chokepoint put a bounty on Vermeulen who eventually teamed up with Black Panther to remove Chokepoint from Vumbua's CEO position and forced him to flee the continent.

Chokepoint chose to set up in America to do the mercenary work no longer being taken by Vumbua International. For a time Chokepoint served as an enforcer for Hammerhead. However, during this time he was frequently outmatched by Spider-man. Chokepoint realized he would need to retake his old company to access enough of their super soldier formula to not be so easily defeated by the world's strongest heroes.
