Hidden Gems On Streaming TV

Some great shows to check out

By Jason APublished about a year ago 3 min read

For several years, streaming apps have been a major part of the entertainment landscape in our culture. From the original streaming source of Netflix to the countless others that have popped up over the years, a large portion of the population has embraced this as either one of their major forms of information or entertainment or their primary one.

Whether we subscribe to a specific service or not, we have all heard about some of the major shows that have built these apps to become the powerhouses they are today. However, if you have either exhausted the full count of episodes of some of the more notable shows or you simply don't care for the content that contain, there is some good news. There are several really good "hidden gems" out there for you and your loved ones to enjoy.

Here is a short list of shows you might want to check out.

Hudson and Rex

This show available on the Canadian app Up Faith and Family, currently has six seasons and 100 available episodes. It scores a 7.3 out of 10 rating on IMDB and has been nominated for 17 awards.

The premise of this show is the working and personal relationship between a detective (Charlie Hudson) and his K9 partner (Rex) and their adventures solving crimes in the city of St. John's and the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The show is on the lighthearted and family-friendly side when it comes to police dramas and is likely to be a big hit with any dog lovers out there.

Leverage and Leverage Redemption

While Leverage originated on cable television, it was added to the catalog on the streaming giant Amazon Prime Video, a while back. Leverage: Redemption was a spin-off/reboot of sorts that featured most of the same cast in the same roles years later. The original has five seasons and a 7.9 out of 10 rating on IMDB. The reboot has three seasons to date with 39 episodes and an IMDB score of 8/2 out of 10. Leverage had a total of 20 award nominations and three wins. Leverage: Redemption has had four award nominations and one win.

The theme of the show focuses on a group of talented professional thieves that come together and change their ways in order to use their skills for good. They take down the corrupt among the rich and powerful to help "the little guy" get justice outside of the law.

These two are great for anyone who likes clever storylines and quirky characters and wants to see the bad guys get their due.

Mystic

This is another gem that is available on Up Faith and Family and currently has three seasons available with a total of 29 episodes. The show gets a slightly lower 6.4 out of 10 rating on IMDB, but don't let that discourage you from checking it out. The show has also had four award nominations and came away with three wins.

Mystic takes place in New Zealand and follows the story of a teen who has moved there with her mother from Australia. She is a bit of an outcast at first but soon discovers a supernatural connection with a mystical white horse from ages past.

If you love great scenery in your shows, you won't be disappointed. And of course, if you have a passion for horses, it is a must-see.

There are several more options out there for great viewing experiences beyond the top-billed shows in major app catalogs. It is just a matter of doing a little exploring. Perhaps this short list may be a good place to start.
